India and Indonesia are close to finalizing a $450 million deal to supply BrahMos cruise missiles after consultations in New Delhi between delegations of military officials from the two countries, Indian media reported.

The talks were part of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's official visit to India as the chief guest to attend the 75th Republic Day celebrations.

On January 26, President Prabowo led a high-level delegation, including Indonesian Navy Admiral Muhammad Ali, to visit the headquarters of BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between Russia and India.

According to News18 , Mr. Prabowo inspected the advanced features of the BrahMos missile system and the Indonesian delegation was briefed by the Indian side on the speed, range, and launch options from land, air, and sea of the BrahMos missile system.

Last year, another Southeast Asian country, the Philippines, became the first foreign buyer of the BrahMos missile, with Manila taking delivery of the first batch in April 2024 under a $375 million deal signed in 2022.

Additionally, BrahMos Aerospace is also reportedly in discussions with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and a few other countries for possible sales. Saudi Arabia and Malaysia have also been identified as potential customers for the BrahMos missile, according to Indian officials.

Designed to carry out long-range precision strikes, the BrahMos missile is capable of attacking targets on land and at sea. Initially it had a range of only 290km, but subsequent upgrades have extended the range of the BrahMos to 500km.

In a statement issued on January 27, Indian President Droupadi Murmu stressed that defense and space cooperation are emerging as key areas of bilateral relations between the two countries, and affirmed that Indonesia is a key pillar of India's "Act East" policy and Indo-Pacific Vision.
