The mountainous region of Quang Ngai province is considered to have extremely rich, diverse and rare natural medicinal resources due to favorable soil and climate. This is the potential for the province to develop medicinal plant specialized areas.
In the garden of Mr. Dinh Van Pay (Ba He village, Son Tinh commune, Son Tay district, Quang Ngai province), tubers have been produced after 1 year of experimental planting. With this initial result, Mr. Pay hopes to improve his family's economy. Like Mr. Pay, many households in Son Tay district have experimentally planted many medicinal plants, such as: ground ginseng, male ginseng, ginger, seven-leaf ginseng, lemongrass, cardamom, morinda officinalis... which have brought positive signals.
Tra Bong district is one of the four key cinnamon growing areas in the country. Currently, the cinnamon growing area in Tra Bong is 5,200 hectares, harvesting about 1,600-2,000 tons of cinnamon bark each year, of which about 70% is exported to make essential oils and handicrafts. Up to now, Quang Ngai province has 17 products extracted from cinnamon trees that have been recognized by the province as provincial-level OCOP products.

Ca Dam mountain area at an altitude of 1,400m above sea level is also a suitable place to grow medicinal herbs such as seven-leaf ginseng, thousand-year-old ginseng, wind ginger, golden orchid, purple cardamom, agarwood, smilax glabra, and areca nut ginseng... Tra Bong district has successfully tested the model of "Growing wind ginger intercropped with some food crops and short-term industrial crops".
In addition to cinnamon, Tra Bong also tested some medicinal plants such as angelica in Ta Ot village (Tra Tan commune) with a scale of 3,500m2 and 1,000m2 of Platycodon grandiflorum. According to calculations, after deducting costs, on average, each hectare of Platycodon grandiflorum or angelica can yield 100 million VND/crop/year.

Ms. Huynh Thi Thanh Thuy, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tra Bong district, said: “Next year, we will continue to maintain and review the growth rate of medicinal plants before boldly investing in large-scale production. Medicinal plants have great economic and social value, however, market factors need to be evaluated and there needs to be long-term cooperation with purchasing units to stabilize output.”
The ethnic minority and mountainous areas of Quang Ngai province include 61 communes in 5 mountainous districts, with 187,000 H're, Ca Dong, Cor ethnic people, accounting for about 15% of the province's population. With a large natural area, this area has many potentials and strengths to develop the agricultural and forestry economy, especially the potential for developing medicinal herbs under the forest canopy.

On September 12, Mr. Vo Phien, Vice Chairman of Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee, proposed to the Ministry of Health to consider and select an investment project to support the development of a precious medicinal herb growing area in Tra Bong district under the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development for Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2025 period.
Accordingly, the capital demand for project implementation in the period of 2021-2025 is nearly 60 billion VND. The total planned area for project implementation is more than 2,300 hectares in the communes of Son Tra, Tra Phong, Tra Bui, Tra Tay, Tra Thanh, Huong Tra (Tra Bong district). Regarding the types of medicinal plants implemented in the project, 15 valuable medicinal plant species have been identified that are suitable for the climate and soil of the district, such as: cinnamon, Vietnamese ginseng, cau ginseng, wind ginger, Vietnamese codonopsis, seven-leaf ginseng, panax notoginseng, cardamom, etc.
