This is a strategic and timely step in ensuring food safety for people in the direction of risk-based management.
Identify and assess risks
The National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene (NFHS) has just announced the Decision to establish the Food Safety Risk Assessment Center. Accordingly, the Food Safety Risk Assessment Center under the National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene was established under Decision No. 1936/QD-BYT dated July 8, 2024.
The Center is responsible for identifying and assessing health risks caused by chemical, biological and other agents in food and related products; advising on risk management and risk communication on food safety.
On the other hand, the Center participates in developing technical standards and regulations; building a network to collect and synthesize information and data; training and cooperating domestically and internationally on food safety risk assessment according to regulations.
The Center's mission is to identify and assess food safety risks; participate in developing standards and regulations; build a network to collect and synthesize information and data; train and cooperate domestically and internationally; and advise on food safety management.
Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen said that food safety is an essential issue that directly affects the lives of all people. Safe food not only protects health, but also plays an important role in sustainable development and building social trust.
With the increasing demands of society, proactively assessing, forecasting and minimizing risks related to food safety has become an urgent requirement. Realizing the importance of risk assessment in supporting food safety management, the Ministry of Health has signed a decision to establish the Food Safety Risk Assessment Center.
The establishment of the Center in this context is a strategic and timely step in ensuring food safety for people in the direction of risk-based management. The Center will be responsible for assessing food safety risks, researching and developing advanced methods to identify and prevent potential risks.
In particular, with the scientific and technical support of international experts and organizations, the health sector can completely build a systematic and professional food safety risk assessment system, thereby contributing to minimizing the harmful effects on public health.
Better food safety quality control
In order for the Center to operate effectively and truly promote its role, Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen directed the Center to assess food safety risks on several important points: The National Institute for Food Safety Control needs to prioritize the development of resources, especially high-quality human resources for the Center. In particular, strengthening exchanges and cooperation with international organizations is of great significance in training human resources to assess risks according to WHO/FAO standards.
The cooperation will help the center access international technological advances and knowledge, thereby applying the most advanced assessment methods in the field of food safety.
The National Institute for Food Safety Control proactively proposes and conducts risk assessment studies on potential hazards in the food supply chain, from production to distribution and consumption, to provide early warnings and timely prevention of risks that may harm public health.
On the other hand, the Institute creates conditions for the Risk Assessment Center to actively participate in the work of developing and perfecting food safety standards and regulations.
This is very important in establishing strict regulations that are suitable for the actual conditions of Vietnam, as well as harmonizing with international standards. This will be the basis for better control of food quality and safety, and at the same time increase people's confidence in domestically consumed products.
In addition, the National Institute for Food Safety Control needs to build a nationwide network to collect data and information on food safety to serve the assessment of food safety risks. This network not only plays an important role in detecting and analyzing risks but also provides necessary information to management agencies, helping to improve the effectiveness of monitoring work.
In addition, the Institute's Risk Assessment Center must always be a bridge to advise on State management of food safety. The Food Safety Department has instructions to promote the role of the Food Safety Risk Assessment Center in risk-based food safety management.
The establishment of the Food Safety Risk Assessment Center demonstrates the attention and direction of the Ministry of Health's leaders. The establishment of the Center is a joy, a source of pride and an important milestone marking the maturity of the National Institute for Food Safety Testing. In order for the Center to achieve its operational goals, it requires continuous efforts, effective and timely investment in both quality and quantity of specialized staff.
