Parents complain that their children cannot take extra classes: Is there no place to send them or is it because they are afraid that their children will lose out to their friends?

Reality shows that many parents send their children to extra classes to 'not lose to other people's children', while others worry because they don't have a place to send their children.

In recent days, many parents with children in primary school have complained that they cannot send their children to extra classes as before after Circular 29 took effect, which includes a regulation prohibiting extra tutoring for primary school students.

Need to send children, but also want them to be better

Ms. Hao, a parent whose child is in 4th grade in Thu Duc City (HCMC), complained: "My child is very bad at math, I want him to improve in this subject so I asked a retired teacher to tutor him. But Circular 29 makes the teacher refuse to teach my child, why is that?".

Ms. Hao’s child’s extra class has about 10 students in grades 4 and 5, who are taken to school by their parents after school. Currently, the parents are very confused because their children are not allowed to take extra classes.

"Learning skills or learning culture is still learning. Whatever my child is weak in, I want him to be nurtured in that. I can't pick him up until 6pm anyway, so I leave him with the teacher. Why is it forbidden? Who will take care of my child now?", Ms. Nguyet, whose child is in 3rd grade in Ho Chi Minh City, lamented.

There are also cases where parents are helpless because they do not know where to send their children when they work far away and come home late.

"I work far away and don't come home until 7pm, sometimes later. I used to leave my child with the teacher, but now she doesn't accept them anymore. I've been helpless and confused since yesterday and don't know what to do," Ms. Thuy, whose child is in second grade in a district far from the city center, shook her head and sighed.

Many elementary schools have clubs until 5:30 p.m.

Regarding parents' need to send their children after school, it is noted that many primary schools in Ho Chi Minh City currently organize after-school clubs, meeting parents' need to send their children after school until 5:30 p.m. every day from Monday to Friday.

In some districts such as District 1, District 3, District 10, Tan Binh, Tan Phu, the number of primary schools that organize after-school activities after school hours is nearly 80%, 90%. Many schools also assign nannies to take care of students after school hours until parents pick them up.

"Our school has many clubs. Besides, school lets out at 10 minutes to 4 p.m. but the pick-up time is 5:30 p.m. If after 5:30 p.m. the parents have not picked up the students, the nannies will gather the students and send them to the school security until the parents come to pick them up," said Ms. Do Ngoc Chi, principal of Nguyen Binh Khiem Primary School, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre , an elementary school teacher said: "In the past few days, there have been parents begging us to tutor their children, but we can't. Most of these parents are afraid that their children will fall behind their peers, so they send their children to school."

Organized extra classes for primary school students, center closed

The People's Committee of Binh Hung Hoa B Ward, Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City, has just drawn up a record and handled violations of Circular 29 on extra teaching and learning for Trang Nguyen Cultural Training Center in this district.

The inspection team found the center tutoring nearly 20 elementary school students, most of whom were studying Vietnamese.

The authorities requested the center to close and remove illegal advertising signs until the violations are corrected. If the violations continue, the center's license will be revoked.
