The patient was admitted to the hospital in mid-November 2023 with a headache, an increasing scalp ulcer, spreading with discharge.

After performing tests and CT scans, doctors diagnosed the patient with rare malignant scalp cancer, stage 3, and the cancer cells had invaded the brain sinuses. If the tumor was not treated early, the patient's life could be in danger.

Interdisciplinary doctors (Department of Cranio-Spinal Surgery, Department of Oncology and Palliative Care, Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation, and the microsurgical plastic surgery team) consulted and planned the surgery.

The surgery process took place in 2 teams: Team 1 performed brain and spine surgery, tumor removal, led by Dr. Dang Viet Son, Head of the Department of Brain and Spine Surgery, and Team 2 performed microsurgery, led by Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, Head of the Department of On-Demand Treatment.

The surgery, which lasted more than 10 hours, was successful; the entire tumor was completely removed and treated.

Dr. Dang Viet Son said that this is the first time the hospital has discovered and received a case of rare scalp cancer that has invaded the brain sinus and is also the first time the hospital has successfully performed surgery to remove this type of tumor.

According to Dr. Son, during the process of removing the tumor from the 63-year-old female patient, the most dangerous part was the tumor invading the sagittal sinus. If not meticulous and careful, it could cause uncontrollable massive bleeding.

However, after nearly 5 hours of surgery, the tumor was safely removed by the surgical team and then the patient's skull was reconstructed with Mesh - Titanium.

"Reshaping the skull with Mesh - Titanium is the most modern technique today, ensuring the protection of the skull and restoring the original shape of the head. Currently, only a few central hospitals can perform this technique ," said Dr. Son.

Currently, the patient is recovering well, the painful symptoms are gone, he can eat and drink, the skin flap implanted on the skull is doing well... After screening tests on all tumor sections, there was no evidence of tumor metastasis, as well as lymph nodes in the head, face and neck area.

The success of the surgery brought great joy to the patient and his family; at the same time, it was also a motivation for the medical team of Viet Tiep Hai Phong Hospital.
