US President-elect Donald Trump returned to the White House on November 13 to meet President Joe Biden after winning the election on November 5.

President Biden welcomed his predecessor and successor, Donald Trump, to the Oval Office on November 13. This was Trump's first return to the White House since ending his term four years ago.

Before leaving office, Mr. Trump was impeached for the second time by the US House of Representatives on charges of inciting an insurrection after the riot at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Mr. Trump then did not recognize Mr. Biden's victory and attempted to challenge the election results.

He also did not invite Mr. Biden to the White House and left Washington DC just hours before his rival’s inauguration. Mr. Trump had vowed to return and finally fulfilled that promise when he won the recent election by overwhelmingly defeating Vice President Kamala Harris.

Mr. Trump won all 7 battleground states, reaching 312 electoral votes (Ms. Harris had 226 votes) and also had more popular votes. On November 6, Mr. Biden congratulated and extended an olive branch when inviting Mr. Trump to the White House, as is customary after the election.

The two leaders were happy during the meeting on November 13.

"It's important not only because it's important to him, but it's important to the American people. They deserve this. They deserve a peaceful transition of power, a smooth transition. And that's what you're going to see," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

The spokesman declined to say what the two leaders discussed. Mr Biden was Mr Trump’s rival in the last election until he withdrew in July under pressure from Democrats.

Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Mr. Trump thanked Mr. Biden for his commitment to a smooth transition of power. "Politics is a difficult thing and in many cases it's not a very nice world. But today, it's a nice world and I appreciate that very much," Mr. Trump said after shaking hands with Mr. Biden in the Oval Office.
