Although rower Pham Thi Hue could not qualify for the medal round, it is necessary to acknowledge her efforts to overcome herself in the Quarterfinals of the Women's Heavyweight Single Boat Rowing event at the 2024 Olympics. The technical parameters of the 24 boats participating in the Quarterfinals of the Women's Heavyweight Single Boat Rowing event at the 2024 Olympics show that the challenge is huge for Pham Thi Hue. The Vietnamese rower must face opponents who are superior in terms of physique, fitness, and technique from the world's rowing powerhouses. More specifically, the difference in performance between the group of 18 rowers who won tickets directly from the qualifying round compared to the group of 6 rowers who had to go through the repechage round to enter the Quarterfinals is at least 5 seconds, while for Pham Thi Hue it is nearly 10 seconds in the 2,000m race. In the Quarterfinals, Pham Thi Hue was placed to compete with 5 other rowers in the second round. Notably, there was 26-year-old Dutch rower Karolien Florijn, who won the world championship in 2022 and 2023, and 2 athletes in the world's Top 10. In addition, the rower from Quang Binh was also the oldest athlete in the round, being 4 to 12 years older. Therefore, there were no surprises, Pham Thi Hue finished last in the round of 6 boats with a time of 7 minutes 56 seconds 96. The top three boats to qualify for the Semifinals were Karolien Florijn (Netherlands, 7:29.07), Alexandra Foester (Germany, 7:30.98) and Tatsiana Klimovic (neutral athlete 7:34.30). According to the results of the 4 rounds of competition in the Quarterfinals, the 12 boats that qualified for the medal round had the highest result of 7:26.89, the lowest was 7:41.25, which was a significant difference compared to the remaining 12 boats competing in the rankings. It should be noted that in the recent competition, Pham Thi Hue had the best technical parameters at the 2024 Olympics. Previously, this rower achieved a result of 8:03.84 in the qualifying round, followed by 8:00.97 in the Repechage round and in the Quarterfinals, she shortened by nearly 4 seconds. Sharing after the competition, Pham Thi Hue was also satisfied with the results achieved. She said: "I know that today I have to compete with very strong opponents, but I still set a personal goal, which is to win over myself. During the competition, when I first rowed, I knew that I was behind my opponents, but I was still determined not to be discouraged. I knew that I could not win against my opponents, even finishing last in the race, but I improved my performance on today's competition day." In rowing, due to being greatly affected by objective conditions including wind speed, wind direction and waves, the athletes' performance can fluctuate in a positive or negative direction. However, through each competition with increasing competition, what Pham Thi Hue showed was truly commendable. In particular, the spirit of confidence and determination to overcome oneself in a competition with opponents much stronger in terms of ability needs to be spread, giving strength to teammates in the Vietnamese Sports delegation before very tough competitions with many of the best athletes in the world. Pham Thi Hue shared: "There will definitely be disadvantages for Vietnamese athletes when competing with opponents who are better than them in terms of physique, height, and weight, but personally, I think that those disadvantages will not stop us from trying. If we try every day, right from the training sessions, we may make slow progress but will still gradually improve the achievements of Vietnamese athletes." Pham Thi Hue's journey at the 2024 Olympics continues with the Semi-final competition in the ranking round taking place at 2:30 p.m. on August 1 (Vietnam time) with opponents who are more suitable. Even if there is no more chance to compete for a medal, but to get the best position in the group of rowers in positions from 13 to 24 overall, Pham Thi Hue will still enter the competition with the highest determination.
