Thuy Hien was a guest on the 5 Star Hotel program. Here, she shared about the hidden corners behind the spotlight and her journey at Beautiful Sister Riding the Wind.
Thuy Hien was born in 1979, in a family with a tradition of sports with her father being a football player and her sister being a sepak takraw player. From the age of 12, Thuy Hien showed outstanding talent and became a potential seed of the Vietnamese Wushu village in the 1990s and early 2000s.
At the age of 14, Thuy Hien shone brightly when she won the Gold medal at the World Championship in Malaysia in the Saber Art category, opening a 10-year journey to the peak of her career. In 2005, she retired from competition. After leaving the arena, she worked as a Wushu coach and referee for the Hanoi Department of Physical Education and Sports.
Sharing in the program, Thuy Hien said that she won a total of 7 World Gold medals, 2 Asian Gold medals, 1 ASIAD Silver medal, 8 SEA Games Gold medals, was voted as the Outstanding Athlete of Vietnamese Sports 6 times and was especially honored to receive the First, Second and Third Class Labor Medals.
But the first gold medal will always be remembered by her because at that time, the entire sports delegation sang the Vietnamese National Anthem because there was no automatic music like other countries.
"At that time, no one in the delegation brought a tape with the Vietnamese National Anthem because no one thought they could win the Gold medal. So when they went up to receive the medal, the whole delegation stood and sang it with their mouths, including the Chinese expert. Every time I recall that memory, I feel emotional because it was so special, even though it was flawed. That was a special memory in my athlete life when I won the world championship for the first time," Thuy Hien said.
During her 10 years of competing at the top level, Thuy Hien has achieved many successes but also encountered many failures. Few people understand that behind that halo are stomach aches and spinal pains due to constant injuries during training and performing. There were times when she only weighed 40kg, her figure was skinny and small and she wanted to give up.
Thuy Hien once wanted to end her career with a World Gold Medal because she had a knee injury at that time. However, when the 2003 SEA Games were held in Vietnam, she was determined to participate. Standing on the red carpet in Vietnam when her relatives saw her compete with their own eyes, that was the motivation for Thuy Hien to overcome the pain of the injury. At that SEA Games, Thuy Hien won 3 Gold medals as a beautiful farewell to her sports career.
Later in the show, "Wushu Queen" sister Thuy Vinh appeared. She rarely talked about her sister's period of severe depression.
" Thuy Hien once went through a period of severe depression and stood on Vinh Tuy bridge many times. She went through a really terrible time. At that time, I was too far away, only hearing her talk on the phone, I couldn't fully understand. Then I went to Hanoi to live near Hien. Seeing Hien shine on the stage of Chi Dep, that was the moment I felt most touched and happy."
Recalling the crisis period, Thuy Hien said: " Sometimes when I facetimed with my sister, I cried without knowing what was wrong with me. I myself was not aware that I had depression. Maybe because I was strong, I did not believe that I was sick. I overcame all the incidents that happened. But that pride in having depression was wrong.
I still sat and fought with my negative side. I still did normal things like taking my child to school, buying things for my child,... but I didn't feel happy, just sad. No one could answer my questions for a long time."
"The Wushu Queen" said that at that time, relatives were the most important people. "Everyone will know how to listen to depressed people and will understand what they want. Let depressed people have a place to share. If there is no place to share, they will easily become stuck," Thuy Hien shared.
Overcoming the haunting depression, Thuy Hien came back strong. She joined Chi Dep Dap Gio with the desire to not only add a different color but also bring an emotional story about the journey of overcoming depression. She hopes that women must always be truly confident and believe in their ability to realize their dreams.
Although her journey ended with regret, Thuy Hien left many beautiful impressions in the hearts of the public. Looking back on a long journey, the "Wushu Queen" believes that whether it is a sports career or any other profession, if we pursue our passion with all our abilities, no matter what the result is, we will never feel regret. Every effort, endeavor, and perseverance is a source of pride for ourselves, our families, and our country.
Currently, Thuy Hien regularly exercises and plays table tennis every day, thanks to which she maintains an admirable figure in her late forties.
