Amidst the first cold winds of the season, Nghi Xuan farmers are still busy harvesting peanuts for the fall-winter crop. This year, peanuts have a high yield and sell for a good price, so farmers are very excited.
In Thuan My village, Xuan My commune, Mr. Le Van Hoa happily said: "Taking advantage of the dry weather, my family has harvested 2 sao of peanuts in the past few days. The weather at the beginning of the season was not favorable, but in return, the peanuts have many tubers, all of which are more beautiful than the previous autumn-winter crop. After more than 3 months of care, my family expects to harvest about 240 kg of fresh peanuts. Of which, I will keep 40 kg for seeds, and sell the rest because the price of peanuts this year is quite high ."
In the 2023 autumn-winter crop, the entire Xuan My commune planted more than 3 hectares, using L14 peanut variety, mainly concentrated in Thuan My village.
Ms. Tran Thi Hieu - Vice Chairman of Xuan My Commune People's Committee said: Due to heavy rain at the beginning of the season, peanut planting was 10 days later than the crop schedule. However, from the beginning of the season until harvest, technical staff closely followed the fields, guided people on care, pest control, and rat extermination, so the average yield reached 1.2 - 1.3 quintals/sao, an increase of about 20 kg/sao compared to last year.
At this time, in the production areas of My Thuan, Cat Thuy, Phuc Tuy, Khang Thinh villages in Xuan Vien commune, farmers are also actively going to the fields to harvest the autumn-winter peanut areas. Currently, the whole commune has harvested more than 2/3 of the peanut area.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy - Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Xuan Vien Commune, in the autumn-winter crop, the whole commune planted nearly 5 hectares of peanuts, with an estimated yield of about 12 tons. In general, this year's peanuts have tubers, ensuring quality for seeds for about 1/3 of the local peanut area for the 2024 spring crop.
Not only has productivity increased, but this year, peanut prices are at 57-60 thousand VND/kg. Therefore, in addition to reserving for seeds, farmers in the communes will sell to the market, increasing their income.
According to Nghi Xuan farmers, the time from planting to harvesting of autumn-winter peanuts is about 100 days, suitable for the natural conditions and climate in the locality. The quality of peanut seeds is very good, the annual germination rate reaches nearly 100%. This is the source of seeds, helping farmers reduce input costs for spring peanut production - the main crop of the year.
In 2023, Nghi Xuan district will produce more than 8 hectares of autumn-winter peanuts, with an output of about 20 tons, worth nearly 1.1 billion VND. Through inspection and evaluation, this year's autumn-winter peanuts have achieved high productivity, ensuring quality for use as seeds for the next spring crop. Proactively producing peanut seeds will contribute to reducing the use of seeds bought illegally on the market, while increasing the productivity and output of commercial peanuts in the main production season - spring crop 2024.
