American universities offer free tuition and special treatment for medical students

(Dan Tri) - In the US, some universities have exempted tuition fees for medical students, mainly thanks to the school's abundant charity funds.

Total tuition at medical schools in the US ranges from $155,000 to $250,000.

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges' 2022 survey of 17,000 students, 75% of medical students in the US currently have to borrow money to pay for tuition or living expenses. The average debt of a medical student after graduation is $200,000.

Student debt varies depending on whether they attend public or private school, study in their home state or move to another state, receive scholarships, etc.

Understanding the financial problems that medical students face, some universities in the US have introduced tuition waiver programs.

Most American students can study medicine for free at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University during this fall's intake.

This was made possible by a $1 billion donation from Bloomberg Philanthropies, which enabled the school to waive tuition for incoming freshmen from families earning less than $300,000 a year.

In fact, 95% of families in the US fall within this income limit. Not only that, the school will support living expenses for students from families with incomes below $175,000.

"By reducing financial barriers, we hope to help more young people pursue the careers they are passionate about and dream of. We want to help them contribute to society in the most ideal and practical way," said Michael Bloomberg, former mayor of New York City and founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies.
