Mr. Trump speaks at the White House on February 20.

Fox News on February 21 quoted US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz as saying that Ukraine was wrong to oppose President Donald Trump's approach to peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.

Mr. Waltz called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to "tone down" with the United States and seriously consider a deal to sell $500 billion in natural resources, including oil and gas.

Earlier on February 19, Mr. Zelensky said that although the US had provided Ukraine with 67 billion USD in weapons and 31.5 billion USD in budget support, the act of demanding to repay the support with 500 billion USD in minerals was "not serious".

The Ukrainian president said the US proposal was unfair because it did not include security guarantees, while he did not want Ukraine to become a hub for raw materials.

According to Mr Waltz, Kyiv was wrong to oppose Washington’s approach to peace talks with Moscow, after everything the US has done for Ukraine. He rejected the accusation that the US had ignored Ukraine and its European allies by excluding them from the dialogue with Russia on February 19. He said it was standard “shuttle diplomacy”.

“Some of the rhetoric coming out of Kyiv… and the insults toward President Trump are unacceptable,” Mr. Waltz told reporters at the White House.

"It's clear that President Trump is very frustrated right now with President Zelensky, because he's not coming to the table, because he's not willing to take the opportunity that we've given him," he said.

There are other signs that the Trump administration is now considering distancing itself from Ukraine diplomatically, according to The Guardian .

The United States is refusing to sponsor a draft United Nations resolution to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The resolution would condemn Russia and reaffirm Ukraine’s sovereignty, as well as the border between the two countries before 2014, when Russia had not yet declared its annexation of Crimea, according to Reuters.

The White House also did not support a statement from the G7 countries criticizing Russia and did not support plans to allow Mr. Zelensky to address the leaders of the group, according to the Financial Times . The G7 includes the UK, Canada, Germany, the US, Japan, France and Italy.
