Apple reportedly blocked about $7 billion in suspected fraudulent transactions from 2020 to 2023, including more than $1.8 billion in 2023 alone. Apple also blocked more than 14 million stolen credit cards and more than 3.3 million unauthorized accounts during this period.
Notably, Apple has rejected more than 1.7 million developer submissions for failing to meet its privacy and content security standards. The company has also terminated nearly 374 million developer and customer accounts and removed nearly 152 million invalid reviews and comments. Furthermore, Apple has rejected more than 91,000 developer registrations.
App moderation helps eliminate many fraudulent and scam apps on the App Store
The App Store review team must thoroughly review each version of an app submitted, with an average of 132,500 apps reviewed each week. The review process includes both automated and manual reviews to detect and prevent fraud and harmful apps.
A classic example of a scam app is one that initially appears “innocuous,” such as a photo editing or gaming app, but then, after an update, turns into an app for streaming pirated movies, gambling, or credit card fraud. In some cases, Apple’s review team has identified and removed a number of financial apps designed to scam users.
The report, which Apple publishes every year, could provide a more positive view of Apple’s App Store this year, especially as the company faces new regulations from Europe. The bloc’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which came into effect in February, requires Apple to allow third-party app stores and sideloading. It also requires developers to use third-party payment technology if they want to, rather than going through Apple.
Apple argues that the forced opening under the DMA could undermine the security of the iOS ecosystem, but its strict measures and track record in preventing fraud show that it is working to protect users from online threats.
