According to Gizmochina , the lawsuit filed in 2019 in the Superior Court of California (USA) accused Apple of making false promises to users when they said they could share any application subscription with their family members.

Apple has agreed to pay $25 million instead of pursuing a costly legal battle

The lawsuit claims that users were tricked into buying subscriptions they couldn’t actually share, resulting in costly fees. Despite insisting that they did nothing wrong, Apple agreed to pay $25 million to settle the case rather than face a costly legal battle.

The question is, who is eligible for the payout? This is stated in the settlement agreement, which reads: “Any person who initiated a subscription purchase for an app through the App Store, excluding subscriptions to Apple apps, between June 21, 2015 and January 30, 2019, while a member of a Family Sharing group that included at least one other member at the time of purchase, and who was a U.S. resident at the time of purchase.”

Simply put, if a user meets the following criteria, they can be one of the recipients of compensation from Apple: (1) was a member of a Family Sharing group with at least one other person between June 2015 and January 2019; (2) lived in the US during that time; (3) purchased a non-Apple paid app through the App Store during that time.

The exact amount depends on the number of people filing claims, but it could be as high as $50 per person. Eligible users have until March 1, 2024, to file a claim by visiting the Family Sharing Plan lawsuit website. A final hearing will be held on April 2, 2024 to finalize the settlement.
