Today, October 27, at the National Convention Center (Hanoi), the University of Education (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) organized the Hanoi Forum on Educational Sciences and Pedagogy 2023 (HaFPES 2023).
"Anyone can comment on education like they can comment on football"
According to Professor Nguyen Quy Thanh, Principal of the University of Education, from the perspective of public opinion, educational topics are "easy to talk about". In recent years, almost every month there have been debates on issues related to education.
These debates are often endless, even creating conflicts on social networks, in many families, intergenerational conflicts as well as conflicts of views between husband and wife on the same educational issue.

According to Professor Thanh, the reason these debates often do not reach a consensus is because many participants only give assessments and opinions based on their personal experiences of education rather than on scientific educational thinking and its achievements.
This situation is so common that many people jokingly say "anyone can comment on education like commenting on football" because everyone has watched or played football and it seems easy to understand.
Meanwhile, to get correct, scientific conclusions, these discussions need to have professional authority - a very important concept of scientific communication, or in other words, must be based on serious scientific discussions.
Policy criticism as affected citizens must be separated from criticism by those with authority and professional competence. HaFPES wishes to create a platform for serious scientific debate by those with such authority and professional competence.
Expanding the scope of research
Professor Thanh stated that educational science is an interdisciplinary science, involving fields such as philosophy, economics, psychology, sociology, management science...; even fields of natural science such as advanced neurophysiology, sensory system physiology or in the field of technology such as information technology.
Education is not limited to teaching and learning in schools. It is also considered as an institution, a social activity that takes place inside and outside schools, directly and indirectly, formally and continuously.

Pedagogy or pedagogical science is the science of methods and practices in teaching children to achieve the same example as teachers. For a long time, in Vietnam, there has been a narrow approach to pedagogy (identifying pedagogy with pedagogy), which has limited the scope of research and training fields in educational science.
This has resulted in a lack of basic research on education from other sciences, especially from the perspective of neurophysiology. Even in the closest field of psychology, teacher training schools mainly research and train in areas such as pedagogical psychology, educational psychology, and special education. Other areas that provide a deeper understanding of the educational process such as developmental psychology, age psychology, neuropsychology, psychology of thinking and creativity, and psychometrics have not been given much attention in research.
Science needs evidence
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Deputy Minister of Education and Training, although research on educational science has existed in Vietnam for a long time, meeting the requirements of such research activities in the current situation has many limitations.
In recent years, the Ministry of Education and Training has recognized the importance of educational science, especially in the field of application of educational science to policies related to education, so it has promoted scientific research on education.
Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc said that recently, the Ministry of Education and Training has taken many steps to promote research on educational science.
Currently, the Ministry of Education and Training is presiding over an educational science research program, with 49 national-level topics. Of these, 34 topics focus on solving problems serving the management and policy development of educational innovation, aiming to contribute to the fundamental innovation of Vietnamese educational science in a modern direction, taking evidence-based research as the foundation, suitable to the characteristics of Vietnam and approaching the level of world educational science.
The research results will provide a scientific basis for synchronous innovation of basic elements of the education and training process; education management; education philosophy, construction and promulgation of criteria systems, statistical indicators, and databases on education and training.
"As Professor Nguyen Quy Thanh emphasized, we really need to conduct systematic and methodical research on education. In research, scientific nature and scientific evidence are extremely important," said Mr. Phuc.
