There are days just for digitizing research data.

Dr. Nguyen Vu Ky is currently the Head of the Department of Japanese Economics and Politics, Faculty of Japanese Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Since his third year of university, Dr. Ky has participated in scientific research, with the first topic being "Comparison of the civilizing movement in Japan and Vietnam in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - The short hair cutting movement in Japan and Vietnam".

Later, Dr. Ky continued to pursue research on Japan-Vietnam relations, as well as expanding his research on international relations in East Asia. He was particularly interested in Japan-Vietnam relations during the Vietnam War and the impact of the Vietnam War on Japan's politics, economy, and society.

Regarding the impact of the Vietnam War on the Japanese economy, Dr. Nguyen Vu Ky commented: "In Vietnam, there are few works that thoroughly explain this issue. One reason for the lack of research is the lack of documents. So this is also a difficulty I encountered in the process of conducting my research."

During his time studying under a scholarship from the Japanese Government at Kanto Gakuin University (Japan) in the period of 2019-2021, Dr. Nguyen Vu Ky accessed and exploited sources of documents in Japan to solve the research problem. According to him, the challenge lies in collecting and processing the sources of documents. "With a huge data warehouse, I cannot bring it all home to survey and research. I have focused on digitizing the documents I have read into my own document warehouse. When I see good documents that contain the problem I am researching, I will collect them, convert them into digital documents and note down relevant information of those documents. There are days when I only digitize research data for that reason," Mr. Ky explained.

From research to scientific awards

In 2022, Dr. Ky conducted the work "The Impact of the Vietnam War on Japan's Economic Development in the Period 1965 - 1973". The research results were then compiled into a monograph titled "The Vietnam War and the Japanese Economy (1965 - 1973)", published by the Social Sciences Publishing House.

The motivation that prompted Dr. Vu Ky to research this topic in depth was to answer questions from his student days. "When studying history in high school, I often heard the opinion that the Vietnam War was like a "divine wind" blowing into the Japanese economy in the 60s of the 20th century. However, I could not help but wonder how much impact the war had on Japan. That was also one of the purposes of my research to supplement that missing information," Mr. Ky shared.

With the above research, Dr. Ky was awarded the first prize in the Science and Technology Award for Young Lecturers in Higher Education Institutions in 2024 by the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Central Youth Union. Mr. Ky said that the award has great meaning in encouraging and promoting the spirit. "When the topic was announced in 2023, the results were accepted by the school council once. In 2024, the results were recognized again by another independent council (here, the award council), which further affirmed the scientific and practical value of the research," he said.

Also in 2024, Dr. Ky was honored to be one of the first 9 scientists to receive the Khue Van Cac Award from the Central Youth Union. This award aims to recognize outstanding young scientists in the field of social sciences and humanities nationwide; marking a worthy recognition for their long-term journey of striving and research efforts.

As Dr. Ky's supervisor during his PhD studies, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Tien Luc, former Head of the Department of Japanese Studies, commented: "Dr. Nguyen Vu Ky is a young, dynamic lecturer who has achieved early success in many fields. Particularly in scientific research, Dr. Ky has a deep passion, knows how to grasp new research trends, has the capacity and skills to conduct scientific research and has soon achieved remarkable successes."

Tips for lecturers and young scientists

Up to now, Dr. Nguyen Vu Ky has won many Vietnamese science awards, including the first prize of the Science and Technology Award for young lecturers in higher education institutions in 2024; the first Khue Van Cac Award for young scientists with outstanding achievements in the field of social sciences and humanities in 2024; the third prize, Pham Than Duat History Award in 2023...

According to Dr. Ky, participating in awards opens up many opportunities for young scientists. "In the context of many doubts about the application of social science and humanities research, participating in awards is a way to introduce research results to everyone, expanding the scope of application in practice. In addition, through awards, scientists have the opportunity to contact research support funds, thereby having the conditions to publish research into books, contribute learning resources to libraries and serve the community," Mr. Ky said.

To achieve success in scientific research, Dr. Ky believes that each person needs to plan early. "Awards for lecturers and young scientists are often limited to an age of no more than 35. Therefore, it is necessary to clearly define the research direction and persistently pursue the chosen goal. When participating in the award, young scientists should aim for meaningful contributions in both science and practice; at the same time, consider this as a motivation, a start for the future research journey, pushing themselves to become better. That is the mindset that a young scientist should have," he shared.
