Ho Chi Minh City : Since Tet, Tam Anh General Hospital has received nearly 100 cases of nosebleeds each month, some of whom have been hospitalized for treatment for many days.

On March 5, Master, Doctor, Doctor Nguyen Trung Nguyen, ENT Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, gave the above information, adding that the hot weather in Ho Chi Minh City, with temperatures above 37 degrees Celsius for a long time, has caused the number of patients visiting the hospital due to nosebleeds to increase by 50-75% compared to before.

Doctor Nguyen Ly explained that sunny weather makes the nasal mucosa dry, susceptible to allergies, these capillaries dilate excessively, burst and cause bleeding. Many people have the habit of picking their nose, blowing their nose hard, increasing the risk of nosebleeds.

People at risk of nosebleeds in hot weather due to thin nasal mucosa such as children, people with nasal polyps (benign tumors in the nasal cavity), people with sinusitis. People who work in dusty environments, smoke because cigarette smoke causes heat, making the surface of the nasal mucosa dry and congested. People who drink a lot of alcohol, alcohol in alcohol dilates arteries... are also prone to nosebleeds in hot weather.

According to Dr. Nguyen, people with a history of high blood pressure are at risk of frequent and severe nosebleeds during the hot season. Hot temperatures cause the heart to beat faster or the body's temperature to change suddenly between outdoors and in an air-conditioned room, causing blood vessels to constrict instantly, increasing blood pressure. At this time, the pressure on the blood vessel walls also increases, leading to rupture and nosebleeds. Elderly patients with both high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis may have more frequent nosebleeds.

Like Mr. Hung, 75 years old, was transferred from a frontline hospital to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for emergency treatment due to a nosebleed. Mr. Hung has underlying diseases of diabetes and high blood pressure, the doctor placed merocel (a soft material that swells when exposed to liquid) in his nasal cavity to stop the bleeding and bring his blood pressure back to a stable level.

Mr. Nam, 33 years old, had continuous nosebleeds, which had recurred for nearly half a month. The doctor diagnosed him with bleeding from the inferior turbinate. He had previously been treated with cauterization of the bleeding point with silver nitrate, but it was only superficial and not completely resolved. After endoscopy, the patient was treated with cauterization of the inferior turbinate with a bipolar electric knife and discharged the same day.

Another case is Ms. Hoa, 27 years old, also had recurrent nosebleeds, and taking medicine did not help. Doctors at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City diagnosed her with a nasal septal hemorrhage and treated her by cauterizing the bleeding points with silver nitrate. After a follow-up visit three days later, Ms. Hoa's nosebleeds stopped.

Nosebleeds are caused by many factors, such as abnormalities in the structure of blood vessels in the nasal mucosa, deviated nasal septum, medical complications, sinus tumors, and sinusitis.

People with nosebleeds often have recurrent nosebleeds during the hot season, mainly due to improper or incorrect treatment.

Doctor Nguyen added that when having a nosebleed, the patient should sit up, lean forward slightly, use hands to directly squeeze the two nostrils, the location causing the bleeding and hold for 5-10 minutes, can repeat 2-3 times if the bleeding has not stopped. You can put some ice on the bridge of the nose to constrict blood vessels, reduce blood flow. In case of continuous squeezing of the nostrils but the bleeding still does not stop, you should go to the hospital for first aid.

If you have nosebleeds many times in two weeks, you should see a doctor for examination and timely treatment. Continuous nosebleeds can be a symptom of some underlying diseases such as nasopharyngeal fibroids, nasopharyngeal cancer...

Depending on the cause, doctors choose different methods to treat nosebleeds such as internal medicine, cauterizing the bleeding point using silver nitrate, cauterizing with a bipolar electric knife. Nosebleeds caused by tumors in the nasal sinus area must undergo endoscopic surgery for complete treatment.

To prevent nosebleeds in hot weather, Dr. Nguyen recommends lowering the temperature of the air in the house by using fans, air conditioners, and open windows. Cool the body by drinking enough water, eating lots of green vegetables and fruits. Limit eating spicy, hot foods, and supplement vitamins C and K through foods such as oranges, kiwis, spinach, and bananas.

Regularly clean your nose with saline to reduce dryness of the nasal mucosa. People with high blood pressure should check their blood pressure regularly, stay in a well-ventilated area, and limit going out in hot weather.
