As Thanh Nien Online has reported, the average number of holidays in the year in Southeast Asian countries is 16-17 days, while Vietnam only has 11 days. There is still room to increase holidays, and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor wants workers to have longer Tet and National Day holidays. That is the opinion of Mr. Ngo Duy Hieu, Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, regarding the proposal to increase holidays and Tet for workers.

Longer Tet holiday to make it more convenient to go home

Sharing her opinion with Thanh Nien Online, Ms. Thu Ngan, whose child is studying at primary school in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, said that she wishes her child's Tet holiday would be longer than 9 days because Ho Chi Minh City is a city with a high rate of immigrants. Anyone who is far from home would want to have more days to reunite with their family. If the Tet holiday is too short, the pressure of traveling by train and bus will be very stressful, and the skyrocketing prices of train and bus tickets will make it difficult for people with average incomes to buy tickets to go home for Tet.

"For example, this year, I see that the Ministry of Home Affairs agrees with the proposal of the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs to have a 9-day Tet holiday, from December 26 to January 5 of the lunar calendar. I want a longer Tet holiday, until the 8th day of the lunar calendar, which would be more optimal," said Ms. Thu Ngan.

Thu Thao, a student at a secondary school in Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City, said she felt a bit disappointed if this year's Lunar New Year holiday only lasted from December 26 to January 5 of the lunar calendar. This female student shared: "I wish the number of days off for Lunar New Year would be longer. For students, this is also a time to relax, or review at home, and they can still arrange time to visit grandparents or go back to their hometown if they live far away. If the Lunar New Year holiday lasts until January 10 of the lunar calendar, I think students will be very happy."

The number of annual holidays should be fixed.

From the perspective of a teacher, Mr. Nguyen Viet Duc, a teacher at a school in District 10, Ho Chi Minh City, expressed his opinion: "The National Day holidays of September 2 and April 30 can be legalized by converting (converting working days to weekends) to extend the holidays without affecting production. Each holiday should only last 2-3 days. As for the Lunar New Year holiday, in my opinion, the number of days off should be fixed; for students, it is necessary to create conditions for this group to have a longer holiday, maybe 2-3 weeks. This will reduce the pressure on traffic, approaching the way the school year is organized in many countries around the world (most of the world has a holiday for Christmas and New Year for about 2-3 weeks)".

Teacher Nguyen Viet Duc also analyzed: "For students, the study time has been specified in many documents of the education sector, so with 35 weeks of actual study, it is not difficult to adjust the days off. In particular, the longer Lunar New Year holiday is meaningful for students, students, and education officials in big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City because of the large number of students, most of whom come from many provinces to live, giving many days off will have many benefits such as: reducing traffic pressure, reducing travel costs for this group of people, creating time to regenerate energy, stimulating demand,...".

"Should increase the number of National Day holidays 2.9"

From another perspective, Ms. Thao Linh, a parent with a child studying at Phuoc Long B Kindergarten, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, said that a 7-9 day Lunar New Year holiday is appropriate. Because if the holiday is too long, it will affect production, or those who need to handle urgent administrative procedures and paperwork will also be confused.

The remaining time should be extended for the National Day holiday on September 2 because this is also a time to stimulate tourism, and families can plan to rest and travel before the new school year begins. If there is a holiday before the school year starts, parents will have more time to prepare for the new school year with their children. "I propose that the National Day holiday on September 2 be from September 1 to September 4. The day to return to work is September 5 - the day everyone sends their children to school," said Thao Linh.

Recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs has agreed with the proposal of the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs that officials, civil servants and public employees will have 9 consecutive days off for the Lunar New Year of At Ty. The time is calculated from January 25, 2025 to February 2, 2025, that is, from December 26, Giap Thin year to January 5, At Ty year.

The 2024-2025 school year schedule was issued by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.

According to the 2024-2025 school year schedule issued by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, at all levels of education, from preschool to high school, continuing secondary education and continuing high school education, semester 1 starts from September 5, 2024; semester 2 starts from January 13, 2025.

The time frame for the 2024-2025 school year plan of Ho Chi Minh City also clearly states: "If a holiday falls on a weekend as prescribed by the Labor Law, it will be compensated for on the next working day. School principals will proactively develop appropriate educational plans for their units in accordance with regulations"; "Lunar New Year holiday is expected to start from January 25, 2025 (December 26th of the lunar calendar) to February 2, 2025 (January 5th of the lunar calendar).
