According to Kyodo News Agency, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lawmaker in charge of parliamentary affairs in Japan, Mr. Yasukazu Hamada, said that the country's parliament will elect a new prime minister on October 1, following the party leadership election on September 27.
The LDP holds a majority of seats in the Diet, so the winner of the party's internal elections essentially becomes prime minister.
Polls show that there are three leading candidates among nine candidates to succeed Fumio Kishida as LDP leader. They are Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi, 63; former LDP Secretary General Shigeru Ishiba, 67; and Shinjiro Koizumi, 43, son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
Current Prime Minister Kishida, 67, announced last month that he would resign.
If elected, Mr. Koizumi would be Japan's youngest ever prime minister, while Ms. Takaichi, if elected, would be the country's first female leader.
