Studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style through practical and specific actions, Cam Xuyen district (Ha Tinh) is spreading a meaningful model of supporting and sponsoring orphans in difficult circumstances.
Orphaned of both parents, Nguyen Dinh Huu Phuc and his sister (Cam Quan commune, Cam Xuyen) were taken care of by their grandmother.
Only 12 years old, but Nguyen Dinh Huu Phuc in Cam Quan commune has had to live an orphaned life. Phuc's father and mother unfortunately passed away due to illness, the small house that was once filled with laughter is now locked and overgrown with grass. Phuc and his sister were taken in by their grandmother.
Not only that, the boy also has congenital anemia, gallbladder atrophy, and poor health. Once a month, Phuc has to get a blood transfusion at Ha Tinh General Hospital. The costs of living and medicine make life extremely difficult for the three of them.
After their parents died of cancer, two sisters, Bui Thi Chau and Bui Thi Hang, in Cam Duong commune, had to fend for themselves.
For several years now, since their father and mother passed away from cancer, two sisters, Bui Thi Chau (born in 2007) and Bui Thi Hang (born in 2005), in Cam Duong commune, have been taking care of each other to get by. Despite the care of relatives and local organizations, nothing could fill the void and difficulties in the lives of the two sisters. To earn more money to cover living expenses, in addition to studying at Cam Xuyen High School, Hang had to find a part-time job.
Along with Phuc and Chau, in Cam Xuyen district, there are currently hundreds of orphans in difficult circumstances who need help and support from the community. According to a survey by the district's Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, as of December 2022, there were 753 orphans in the area, including 23 children who lost both parents, 730 children who lost one parent. In addition to some children with guaranteed living conditions, there are still 170 children in especially difficult circumstances and 432 children in difficult circumstances.
Faced with that situation, in order to partly compensate for the disadvantages and losses, ensure living and studying conditions for orphans, and help them become useful people for society, Cam Xuyen district has mobilized social resources.
Each sponsored child has a book to track the sponsorship process.
Deployed from the end of 2022 to now, the whole district has 25 agencies, units, businesses, and individuals committed to sponsoring 35 orphans. The sponsorship period is from 3 to 20 years; the sponsorship level is from 1 to 1.5 million VND/month/child.
In addition to agencies such as the District Party Committee, District People's Committee, People's Committee, Schools, District Police, District Children's Fund, the movement has spread and received support from officials, civil servants of 10 communes, towns and businesses inside and outside the district.
Mr. Dang Quoc Hien - Head of the District Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, the standing unit of the District Child Protection and Care Fund, shared: “With the high consensus of the District Party Committee Standing Committee, since October 2022, the People's Committee of Cam Xuyen District has implemented a plan to launch and build the Cam Xuyen District Child Protection and Care Fund. In addition to sending an open letter to all agencies, units and businesses inside and outside the area, the district leaders have directly participated in working delegations to organize meetings and connect with children far from home in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to call for funds.
With the drastic participation, the fund has so far raised over 2 billion VND. In addition, the district has allocated 300 million VND in the 2023 budget estimate to support orphans; that amount will be used to give gifts to all orphans in difficult and especially difficult circumstances on holidays, Tet and the beginning of the school year, organize some activities and sponsor some orphans.
Representative of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Cam Xuyen district presented support money to Nguyen Van Hoang (Cam Duong commune).
According to Mr. Hien, in order to make the support for orphans in difficult circumstances most meaningful, organizations and individuals, when receiving support and sponsoring children, must commit to the level of support, starting time and duration of support.
In addition to financial support, sponsoring organizations and individuals regularly visit and encourage children about their conditions, spirit, and determination to cultivate, study well, and become useful citizens.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh - grandmother of Nguyen Dinh Huu Phuc (Cam Quan commune) expressed: "I am very touched when the children's circumstances are supported by agencies and organizations. Since January 2023, the People's Committee of Cam Xuyen district has taken care of Phuc and supported him with 1.5 million VND per month until 2033. This is not only a source of material encouragement but also a spiritual comfort, helping him have more confidence to overcome difficulties, strive to study well, and not let down everyone's hearts".
With the humane meaning of the model and support from groups and individuals, in the coming time, Cam Xuyen district will continue to call for resources with the highest goal of ensuring that all orphans in difficult circumstances in the area are sponsored, and that more children are sponsored.
The block of secondary schools in Cam Xuyen district adopted two orphaned sisters in Cam My commune.
Secretary of Cam Xuyen District Party Committee Nguyen Van Thanh said: “Learning from Uncle Ho about his kindness and caring for people's lives, after much consideration, Cam Xuyen district has implemented a model of sponsoring and supporting orphans in difficult circumstances. Although it has just been implemented, with a methodical approach and commitments on sponsorship time, I believe that the model will truly bring special fathers and mothers, helping children overcome difficulties. And I hope that in the long term, the children who are sponsored today, when they become successful, will return to support other children, to continue to replicate and spread humane and meaningful values.”
“There are still many orphans in the area that need attention and help. With the tradition of “mutual love and support”, we hope that organizations, individuals and philanthropists inside and outside the district will continue to join in sharing difficulties with orphans in the district,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh.
