On the evening of October 31, thousands of tourists and residents came to Bui Vien walking street (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) to celebrate Halloween. Many tourists were surprised to see that Vietnamese people responded to the festival more enthusiastically than Westerners.

According to Tuoi Tre Online , since late afternoon, shops, bars, and restaurants along Bui Vien Street have been decorated in Halloween style with dim lights, spider webs, glowing pumpkins, and creepy mannequins.

By 7pm, Bui Vien walking street was quickly filled with witches, zombies and a host of familiar characters from horror movies. People dressed up in bright costumes followed each other on the street.

The crowd started to swell from 8pm. The shops on both sides of the street were getting more and more crowded, many of them had to let customers sit on the street. Many tourists and locals were stuck in the long queue trying to find a way to move out of the walking street.

Mr. Duc Trung (living in District 1) said he did not expect so many people to go out on Halloween today. He thought he would be able to go out and have fun, but the number of people kept increasing until it was "suffocating".

Many tourists who come to have fun on Bui Vien Street also said they feel suffocated by the narrow space. Mr. Lewis (an American tourist) shared: "The first time I came to Vietnam, I was surprised that people here also celebrate Halloween. In my country, Halloween is an occasion for the whole family to dress up, go for a walk and let children ask for candy from the neighbors. This is also an occasion for people in a neighborhood to interact with each other."

Sarah (a Canadian tourist) was also surprised because in Vietnam people celebrate Halloween more "grandly" than Westerners.
