With just under two months to go until the Lunar New Year 2025, the atmosphere in peach gardens in Viet Tri city is becoming bustling and busy. Households are rushing to strip the leaves to ensure that the peach trees will bloom in time for Tet.

In Chu Hoa commune, Viet Tri city, there are currently two households growing peach trees for sale on the occasion of Tet 2025, of which, Ms. Nguyen Thi Chuc's family plans to supply the market with 400 peach trees, along with 200 peach branches. To ensure the flowers bloom on time, Ms. Chuc mobilized 8 people in the family to carry out the leaf stripping step and it took 15 days to complete this work.

Ms. Chuc said: “Leaf stripping also requires a lot of technique, it is necessary to protect the flower buds because these are the buds that are about to bloom. If you are not proficient, you need to strip each leaf, do not strip the leaves straight up, as this will damage the buds. Along with stripping leaves, the peach trees are also supplemented with loose soil, with more nutrients to prepare to grow flowers.”

In addition, depending on each type of peach, the time to strip the leaves is also different. Stripping the leaves is done when the peach tree has stabilized in the pot, after the tree has been removed and planted in the pot for about a week. This is the right time for the peach to start budding, for the flowers to bloom in time for Tet.

Leaf stripping will begin in late October and early November of the lunar calendar.

“Peach trees are usually stripped of their leaves first, and peach trees are stripped last because there are many large, bonsai peach trees. Small trees will take about 30-40 minutes to strip, while large trees with tough branches may take a whole day,” Ms. Chuc added.

Peach cultivation often depends a lot on the weather, but there are still certain skills for a successful crop, in which leaf stripping is an important factor. Weather and human hands are factors that affect the blooming of flowers. If the leaf stripping step is done at the right time and the weather is favorable, the peach will produce large, beautiful, even and timely flower buds.

These days, Mr. Hoang Xuan Luong, one of the peach growers in Nha Nit Peach Blossom Village, has to hire 4-5 workers to strip peach leaves. On average, each worker can strip about 10 small peach trees a day for a salary of 400,000 VND/day.

With more than 10 years of experience growing peach trees, Mr. Luong shared: “Usually, leaf stripping will start at the end of October and the beginning of November of the lunar calendar, about 60 days before Tet. In years when the weather is very cold, leaf stripping needs to be done a few days earlier, like this year, the weather is hot so leaf stripping around this time is reasonable.

Gardeners will start selling peach trees and become busy from the 10th of the 12th lunar month. Mr. Luong's estimated price for Tet peach trees will range from 100-400 VND/branch, and for peach trees, the price will range from 500,000 - 1,500,000 VND/small tree and from 15 to 20 million VND/large tree."

According to Mr. Le Van Ly - Head of Nha Nit Peach Blossom Village, up to now, the weather is considered favorable for households to take care of, carry out the steps of stripping leaves, preparing for the eye-growing stage, and making peach blossoms to be ready to serve the occasion of Lunar New Year 2025.

With 126 households growing peach trees on an area of ​​7.5 hectares, during the Lunar New Year 2025, the craft village is expected to supply about 40,000 peach trees of all kinds to serve market demand. To achieve this number, each peach growing family must take care of 100-200 peach trees, some special households even grow over 1,000 trees.
