Franco Zeffirelli's adaptation of Shakespeare's classic love story has not been without controversy. In late 2022, Hussey Eisley and co-star Leonard Whiting filed a lawsuit against Paramount Studios, the film's producer, for allowing the film to be released with scenes showing them nude while they were minors. According to the complaint, Zeffirelli told Hussey Eisley and Whiting—who were 15 and 16 years old at the time, respectively—"that they must perform nude or the film would fail." The lawsuit was dismissed in May 2023.
Hussey Eisley then starred in the 1974 horror film Black Christmas , appeared in the 1978 Agatha Christie film adaptation Death on the Nile . She also collaborated with Zeffirelli again in 1977, playing Mary in the television series Jesus of Nazareth .
In the 1990s, Hussey Eisley starred in several horror films including Psycho IV: The Beginning and It - a short television series adapted from the Stephen King novel. Then, in the early 2000s, she had leading roles in the biopic Mother Teresa , the horror film El Grito and the comedy Tortilla Heaven .
"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Olivia Hussey Eisley. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on December 27. Olivia was a wonderful person whose warmth, wisdom and genuine kindness touched the lives of all who knew her," the statement posted on Instagram said.
