Having directly participated in trade promotion activities, bringing Vietnamese shrimp and fish to the "big sea", when citing the role of economic diplomacy in "supporting" seafood exports, Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam - Deputy General Secretary of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) still recalled the story of a market survey in Egypt more than 10 years ago.

“When we entered the local market of your country, after introducing ourselves as Vietnamese, the traders of your country excitedly shouted out Vietnam - basa. Indeed, for a country thousands of kilometers away from us, when mentioning Vietnam, they knew basa fish - one of the main export products of the seafood industry, which made us extremely moved,” Mr. Nam shared at a conference to promote the implementation of economic diplomacy to serve socio-economic development not long ago.

Wanting Vietnamese agricultural products to go far, must be linked with diplomacy

“Methodical”, “deep, close”, “timely” are phrases that Ms. Bui Thi Thanh Tam, Chairwoman of the Northern Food Corporation, mentioned many times through vivid stories about the contributions of the diplomatic sector, especially the role of Vietnamese Ambassadors and Representative Agencies abroad in the effort to help Vietnamese rice “score points” in the international market.

From the stories of finding markets for “our village rice” in the 2000s to taking advantage of the rice situation in India to help “rice gain an advantage in the market” or the event of Indonesia - a country that has never imported rice from Vietnam, buying 2 million tons of rice for the first time (in 2022)... according to Ms. Bui Thi Thanh Tam, all have the mark of economic diplomacy.

“With the current new situation, I hope that import and export will no longer be purely commercial activities but will be part of the overall policy direction of the Foreign Affairs sector. There needs to be long-term strategic policies. Enterprises should proactively place orders and accompany diplomatic agencies, not just sit still and wait for support and assistance,” Ms. Tam suggested.

Over the past year, since the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development officially signed the Action Plan to implement economic diplomacy to contribute to promoting the development of the agricultural sector in the 2023-2026 period on August 17, 2023, economic diplomacy has been effective in promoting and opening markets for Vietnamese agricultural, forestry and fishery products; connecting international cooperation and attracting resources to serve the development of agriculture in a modern and sustainable direction; supporting the agricultural sector in international integration and promoting and enhancing its role in multilateral cooperation mechanisms.

Thanking the Foreign Affairs sector for its timely support in the past time, helping to "give wings" to Vietnamese agricultural products to fly far, bringing the image of the country and Vietnamese farmers to many markets and friends around the world, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan affirmed: "If you want to go far, you have to go together and if you want Vietnamese agricultural products to go far, you have to connect with the Foreign Affairs sector".

Many specific, practical results

Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son said that the most important thing in economic diplomacy is to exploit the potential for cooperation with partners that Vietnam has upgraded and upgraded relations with, while creating new resources for the country. Since the beginning of the year, economic diplomacy has been implemented in a systematic and effective manner, making a substantial contribution to socio-economic development.

In dozens of high-level foreign affairs activities since the beginning of 2024, economic content continues to be the focus, bringing specific and substantive results, signing many commitments and cooperation agreements with partners. Most recently, during the State visit to China by General Secretary and President To Lam, central and local ministries, branches and sectors of Vietnam and China signed 16 cooperation documents.

The content of promoting the opening of export markets, negotiating Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), increasing the attraction of investment cooperation resources in new fields such as green economy, energy conversion, high-tech agriculture, tourism, labor... is focused on integrating and concretizing into specific commitments and projects in high-level foreign affairs activities with major partners in Northeast Asia, Europe, North America, and potential partners in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

Along with that, continue to maximize the advantages of the network of 16 FTAs signed with 60 partners, promote negotiations to upgrade many current FTAs and speed up FTA negotiations with new partners.

Economic diplomacy has actively supported connection, promotion, advertising, removing trade barriers, promoting new directions, thereby expanding markets for industries, fields, localities and businesses. Vietnam welcomes many large corporations and businesses such as NVIDIA, Apple, Intel, Google, Inforsys, Siemens...

Right from the first months of the year, Minister Bui Thanh Son directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to focus on implementing tasks to promote economic diplomacy.

The first is to direct representative agencies to continue supporting provinces and businesses to participate in trade promotion activities, tourism investment, and promote key products to the Middle East and Africa, especially the Gulf region. The second is to continue supporting the export of key products, especially wooden products, to the Middle East and Africa markets. Calling for investment from investment funds in the Middle East region in areas that they are very interested in.

The above results were commended and welcomed by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the Prime Minister's Conference with Heads of Vietnamese Representative Agencies Abroad on promoting economic diplomacy to boost economic growth in the last six months of 2024 and the following years, held last July.

Under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son, the tireless efforts of economic diplomacy and the Foreign Affairs sector have been recognized and highly appreciated by many ministries, departments, branches, associations, enterprises, etc., and have "blossomed and borne fruit" day by day, contributing to enhancing the position and bringing the brand of Vietnamese goods and products to the world.

To contribute to boosting export momentum, at the Conference with Heads of Vietnamese Representative Agencies Abroad on promoting economic diplomacy to boost economic growth in the last six months of 2024 and the following years, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested Vietnamese Representative Agencies Abroad to promote Vietnamese goods and products with high quality and competitive prices to the world; as well as increase the introduction of Vietnam's investment and business environment, especially new policies, achievements in infrastructure development, and high-quality human resource training.

The Prime Minister noted that localities and enterprises should strengthen connections with representative agencies abroad, focus on developing, improving quality, exporting strong and competitive products, goods that the world needs, products, specialty goods, meeting development requirements, green transformation requirements of countries, solving immediate and long-term problems. Ministries and branches should perform well the function of State management, orienting development, planning work, especially planning raw material areas in line with the world's development trends.

The Prime Minister directed agencies to continue negotiating and signing FTAs, promoting the expansion of markets in the Middle East, South America, Africa, and Halal products; closely monitoring the situation of trade defense measures applied by countries against Vietnam's export products to have early and remote response measures...
