Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training invites police to investigate suspected leak of 10th grade student exam data

On the morning of June 23, answering VTC News, Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the Department received information reflecting that many candidates received admission text messages, possibly due to information being leaked.

According to Mr. Minh, it is not wrong for private schools to send text messages inviting students to enroll and it happens every year. The problem is how do these schools get information, phone numbers, names, and grades of students. Therefore, the Department believes that it is likely that the data of students taking the 10th grade entrance exam has been leaked.

“The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has not yet announced the 10th grade benchmark scores, and there is no basis for candidates to confirm their admission to public schools or find another path if they are not admitted. The Department has transferred the information to the police to coordinate the investigation to see where and how student data leaked out. Parents are advised to be alert and understand the information carefully when receiving text messages or phone calls announcing admission,” said Mr. Minh.

The Department reminds parents and students to follow the Department's schedule for announcing exam scores to avoid being taken advantage of by scammers.

Mr. Minh added that student data is strictly kept confidential by the education sector. All data specialists of the Department must sign a confidentiality agreement. Education departments and schools are required not to disclose student information or provide it to partners to avoid being exploited by bad actors.

When the 10th grade exam results are available, the Department will transfer exam score data and student information to education departments and schools to support students in searching and making statistics.

Previously, on the evening of June 22, the Department received many reports about fake information about public 10th grade admissions, and text messages with invitations and greetings for students to apply to colleges and intermediate schools.

In addition, on June 21, Tan Binh High School (Tan Phu District) was impersonated and sent a text message informing candidates of their admission and instructions for enrolling in the second choice for grade 10.

According to regulations of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, after receiving exam scores, candidates can submit appeal applications from June 21 to June 24.

Candidates admitted to the schools and directly admitted will submit their admission applications from June 25 to before 4:00 p.m. on June 29. During this time, if candidates do not submit their admission applications, the school will remove their names from the admission list.

June 30th, the results of the exam review will be announced. Candidates who have passed the exam will submit their application for admission to specialized schools and integrated classes on July 5th after receiving the results of the review.

By July 10, the Department will announce the admission benchmark scores and the list of candidates admitted to regular grade 10 of public schools.
