Agriculture: "Sweet fruits" from applying science and technology

(BDO) Over the years, Binh Duong has always paid attention to research activities, application of science and technology and technology transfer in agricultural production. This is considered an inevitable direction, contributing significantly to improving productivity, quality and value of agricultural products, bringing high economic efficiency.

Increase product value

In recent years, many farms, cooperatives, cooperative groups, and farming households in the province have boldly invested in drip irrigation and automatic mist irrigation technology in the agricultural production process, meeting the needs of producing a variety of crops on all terrains. It is noted that investing in an automatic water spraying system, although the capital is quite high (from 100 million VND/ha), is highly effective, with a usage time of over 10 years. In particular, when using an automatic spraying irrigation system, you only need to turn on the power switch for the motor to run, then check the water pipe system to be able to water a large area at any time and can adjust the watering level as desired. Depending on each type of crop, the design of the land area, the height of the spray pipe and the number of installed nozzles increase, decrease, high, low on a cultivated land area.

The organic banana growing model of Dong Thuan Phat Agricultural Cooperative (Thuong Tan commune, Bac Tan Uyen district) brings high economic efficiency.

Mr. Le Quoc Hai, Director of the Family Clean Vegetable Cooperative (Dinh Hoa Ward, Thu Dau Mot City), shared that in order to produce in the direction of high technology, in addition to the system of net houses and automatic irrigation systems, the application of scientific and technological measures (KHCN), and the seasonal calendar must also be implemented according to the requirements. Currently, the net houses and vegetable greenhouses are designed by the cooperative with materials such as steel frames that are strong, easy to disassemble, covered with a thick film on top, and surrounded by nets to help block rain, sunlight, and prevent insects from entering. The cooperative also installed an automatic drip irrigation system using Israeli technology to each tree; fertilizer is mixed into water and then through the drip irrigation system to provide nutrients for the plants to grow. From there, fertilizer is mixed into irrigation water so that the plants absorb better, with higher productivity and economic efficiency than traditional irrigation methods. Thanks to proper care and close monitoring of nutrition, the cooperative's vegetables and fruits grow well, and each crop is ordered early by traders.

It can be seen that the widespread application of science and technology in agricultural production in localities in the province has brought about practical results, not only helping people and agricultural production enterprises save costs, but also contributing to ensuring energy security and promoting socio-economic development.

Towards organic agriculture

Recognizing the importance of science and technology for the development of agriculture, Binh Duong has recently issued many plans and projects to restructure the crop production sector towards developing agricultural models that apply scientific and technological advances such as biotechnology, greenhouse technology, drip irrigation technology, sensor technology, automation, Internet of Things, etc. into production to shift the focus from output to quality and efficiency.

To date, the area of high-tech application in cultivation in the whole province has reached nearly 6,200 hectares, the area of urban agriculture is about 180 hectares. In the province, there are also 4 high-tech agricultural zones operating effectively, bringing high economic value.

In addition, Binh Duong has implemented many development policies, attracting many businesses and farmers to boldly invest in production, develop specialized areas for rubber trees, specialty fruit trees, safe vegetables, associated with processing and consumption according to the value chain; at the same time, promote the application of high-yield and high-quality varieties, resistant to pests and diseases for key crops such as rubber, pepper, banana, melon, citrus, vegetables... Thanks to that, the income and life of rural people are increasing, contributing positively to the development process of the province.

With the goal of improving product quality, increasing competitiveness for local agricultural products and creating high income for farmers, Binh Duong has restructured agriculture towards increasing value and developing high-tech agriculture. Binh Duong aims to increase the proportion of high-tech agricultural production value to over 30%, the area of land for agricultural products meeting GAP standards to 20%, and the number of livestock farms certified with Good Agricultural Practices (GAHP) to 30% by 2025.

In order to contribute to increasing the added value of local agricultural products, increasing competitiveness in the market, aiming at sustainable agricultural development, Mr. Pham Van Bong, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said that in the coming time, Binh Duong will continue to promote high-tech agricultural production, gradually building organic agriculture. First of all, encourage and support enterprises with long-standing production experience, large farms, and stable consumption sources to gradually switch to organic agricultural production. Thereby helping to form effective production models, contributing to promoting the upgrading of existing traditional agricultural production models. Along with that, the Department of Agriculture and Environment promotes digital transformation, develops e-commerce, and builds new model rural areas associated with the smart village model.
