At the Conference, Mr. Tran Dinh Luan - Director of the Department of Fisheries (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said: In 2024, despite facing many difficulties and challenges, with the continuous efforts of businesses, management agencies, and associations, the Vietnamese pangasius industry achieved positive results in both quality and value. Pangasius output in 2024 is estimated at 1.67 million tons, equal to 99% compared to the same period in 2023. As of October 15, 2024, pangasius export turnover reached 1.56 billion USD, an increase of 8.9% over the same period in 2023.
“However, this growth rate is not uniform, the main reason is fierce competition from other countries and white fish products,” Mr. Tran Dinh Luan assessed.
In Dong Thap, Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Thien - Vice Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee, informed: In 2024, the situation of pangasius farming in the locality is relatively stable, the production value of the pangasius industry continues to increase, estimated at more than 8,800 billion VND, an increase of 2.86% compared to 2023. The area for commercial pangasius farming reaches 2,630 hectares (an increase of 10 hectares compared to 2023) with an estimated output of 540,000 tons (an increase of 15,000 tons compared to 2023).
Pangasius is currently the country's main product, accounting for over 30% of the country's total aquaculture output. Pangasius products have been exported to over 150 countries and territories around the world, with an export turnover of over 2.4 billion USD in recent years and an area of 5,600 hectares/year, with an output of over 1.5 million tons.
According to the plan, Vietnam aims to increase value in 2025, striving to achieve an export output of 1.65 million tons, but aiming for an export turnover of about 2 billion USD. In the context of many fluctuations in production, economic and environmental life, this is a goal that requires great efforts from the entire industry and many functional agencies.
At the Conference, in addition to the opportunities for the pangasius industry in the coming time, experts also pointed out challenges for the industry such as: Competition with other aquatic species; export prices of Vietnamese pangasius compared to other countries; impacts of climate change; regulations on emission reduction in farming, processing, and exporting pangasius... At the same time, experts and delegates proposed a number of solutions to develop the pangasius industry.
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien suggested that ministries, branches and localities need to develop pangasius breeds in an industrial direction, with large-scale production, ensuring biosafety. Strictly control the management and use of antibiotics in farming; strictly manage pangasius breed production facilities, ensuring the quality of breed sources; pangasius production and processing must aim for green production, reducing emissions; improve the effectiveness of scientific research in pangasius farming and production.
“It is necessary to develop pangasius breeds in an industrial direction to sustainably develop the industry. Form a closed chain in production - processing - consumption; enhance the application of science and technology, take advantage of by-products to increase product value. In addition to traditional markets, it is necessary to seek and develop new potential markets; including Muslim markets that meet the requirements of Halal certification,” Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien emphasized.
On November 16-17, Dong Thap People's Committee organized Dong Thap Pangasius Festival 2024 in Hong Ngu Pangasius capital, Dong Thap province, with the theme "Green Journey - Green Value".
