The World & Vietnam Newspaper highlights some of the day's international news highlights.
* Ukraine: Russia intensifies attacks on Avdiivka : On November 9, speaking to the news agency Espreso TV (Ukraine), the head of the military administration of the town of Avdiivka, Mr. Vitaliy Barabash, stated that Russian forces are shelling the town "day and night" but the wet ground due to many days of rain has hindered Moscow's forces. However, he emphasized: "Once the ground dries, they will definitely advance."
Meanwhile, Oleksandr Borodin, a press officer for Ukraine’s 3rd Separate Combat Brigade, said Russian infantry was carrying out large-scale attacks while trying to preserve their equipment. “They are using much less equipment, mostly from a distance,” he said. Russia has not been able to replenish supplies quickly, he said, and Ukraine’s defensive position remains strong. (Reuters)
* Russia warns of radioactive waste situation in Ukraine: On November 10, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said there is a risk of radioactive waste from the storage facility of the Pridneprovsky chemical plant in the city of Kamenskoye seeping into the Dnipro River and groundwater in the amount of 12 million tons. The cause could be the erosion of the dam of one of the storage facilities located 800 meters from the river and its tributaries Konoplyanka River.
In addition, each year about 14 tons of radioactive dust is spread throughout the surrounding area and falls on agricultural land.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Kiev government is currently not providing funds to ensure environmental safety at the Prydneprovsky chemical plant. Ms. Zakharova stressed that this could lead to an environmental disaster not only on the territory of Ukraine but also beyond its borders. (TASS)
* Ukrainian drone boats attack Russian warships: Early on November 10, after attempting to attack Sevastopol, the Ukrainian military made a new plan to attack the Crimean peninsula. The first target was the Feodosia oil depot, which they tried to attack with two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). However, these UAVs were shot down and did not reach their target. Then, there was an attack on the base of the Black Sea Fleet and the Russian Security Service (FSB) in Chernomorsk.
At least one Neptune anti-ship missile was used in the attack. The target was a barracks, but the missile missed its target and crashed nearby.
In parallel with these attacks, four Ukrainian unmanned boats were sent to the Gulf of Uzkaya, targeting Russian Black Sea Fleet ships. No servicemen have been killed. This series of attacks shows that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (VSU) are using a mixed attack method, in which different types of weapons are used simultaneously to create distraction and achieve their objectives.
In another development, at 5:17 a.m. on November 10, the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) likely used the Pantsir-S1 air defense system to successfully intercept a suicide UAV of the VSU in the Kireevsky district of Tula province. According to preliminary information, Ukraine used a long-range UAV UJ-22A or Beaver. These UAVs are capable of flying long distances and carrying a large amount of explosives. (Reuters)

* Israel suffered 9,500 rockets: On November 9, the Jewish State announced figures on the conflict with Hamas, which broke out on October 7. Accordingly, the country suffered 9,500 rockets and dozens of UAVs from the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen. Israel's air defense system carried out thousands of successful interceptions at all levels, from Mount Dov in the North to the Red Sea in the South.
According to the spokesman of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), within the first 4 hours, about 3,000 rockets were launched into the territory of the Jewish State. This was the first time that Israel's multi-layered air defense systems such as Iron Dome, David Sling, Diamond and Arrow-3 had to operate continuously.
Previously, during the 34-day Lebanon War in 2006, the country suffered 4,400 rockets. The figure was 4,500 during the 51-day Operation Protective Edge in 2014. The IDF also confirmed that it is preparing for more extreme scenarios such as the possibility of expanding the campaign or new conflict zones.
On October 7, Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, killing 1,400 people and kidnapping more than 240. Meanwhile, according to Palestinian officials, Israel's ongoing military response has killed 10,569 people in Gaza. Of these, up to 40% were children. (AFP/Times of Israel)
* Israeli city attacked by missiles and UAVs : On November 9, the IDF said an unidentified UAV attacked an elementary school in the southernmost city of Eilat in Israel, causing infrastructure damage and panic.
An IDF spokesman at the scene said no one was injured in the explosion, but seven people suffered shock and needed medical attention. Police and the IDF quickly cordoned off the scene.
The IDF has not yet determined the origin of the UAV and no organization or individual has claimed responsibility for the incident. Israeli security officials are leaning towards the hypothesis that the UAV may have been launched by the Houthi movement from Yemen. Editor Ron Benjamin Netanyahu Yishai of the Israeli newspaper Ynet said that the Houthi-made UAV was based on the Iranian Smad-3 model and was capable of carrying a payload of 10-20kg. In addition, authorities are investigating whether the UAV's route flew through Jordan or Egypt.
That same night, sirens sounded in Eilat, the town of Eilot and the industrial area of Shchoret as a series of rockets were fired towards the city. Later, IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said the Arrow-3 air defense system had to be activated to intercept the hostile rockets fired towards the southernmost region of Israel.
In a related story, written on page X , the IDF stated: “In response to a drone from Syria attacking a school in Eilat, the IDF targeted the organization responsible for the attack.” The statement did not identify the organization behind the UAV, but noted that “the Syrian government bears full responsibility for all military operations originating from its territory.” (AFP/Reuters)

However, Israel will ensure that an attack like that on October 7 does not happen again. Mr Netanyahu affirmed that there must be a reliable force that, if necessary, will enter Gaza and destroy extremist forces, stressing that such a force will prevent the re-emergence of an entity similar to Hamas. Previously, Tehran and regional armed forces such as Hezbollah, Houthi and Islamic jihadist movements in Iraq and Syria have threatened to attack Israel or US targets in the region in retaliation for the Gaza offensive.

* Russia may downgrade diplomatic relations with the US : On November 10, in an interview with RTVI (Russia), Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated: "We are really experiencing a serious crisis in relations, something we have never seen before. We need to carefully adjust and verify the steps we will take to prevent further escalation.
“Our leadership encourages the State Department and other federal government agencies to act in this way, that is what we are instructed to do. However, we have seen the Americans take a series of irresponsible and escalatory steps in relation to Ukraine, and not only there... That is why, if we look at the current pattern of Washington's behavior from this perspective, I do not rule out anything. The level (of diplomatic relations) could be downgraded, and the severance of diplomatic relations could also happen.”
However, he stressed that Russia has no plans to initiate the severance of diplomatic relations with the US: “We believe that diplomatic relations are an element of international affairs that must be taken care of, otherwise we will lose all that remains of civilized channels for sending messages to each other.”
The Russian official also pointed out that November 16 will mark 90 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and the United States. This relationship has gone through many ups and downs, even at times as allies and brothers, such as in the fight against the Nazi regime. Mr. Ryabkov stated that Russia will always respond to any opposition and aggressive actions of the United States, affirming that Moscow always firmly and consistently protects its interests in all areas.
