Ms. Loan (second person from right) introduces the model of raising frogs for meat, increasing income.

At the age of 18, Loan married Tran Thanh Lam and made a living by the traditional profession of growing 6 hectares of rice in 3 crops and raising pigs for breeding. Loan worked hard to make use of food sources, reducing raising costs so that selling pigs "would always be profitable" and saving this money to buy fertilizer and fertilizer for the fields. After deducting expenses, the average income was 7 million VND/hectare/year. Later, due to the impact of the blue ear disease, Loan switched to farming. Every 2 days, Loan sold vegetables and tubers for a few hundred thousand VND. Saving up the income, Loan and her husband took care of their 2 children's education.

Regularly updating and learning good models that achieve economic efficiency, in 2020, Loan and her husband renovated 3 hectares of garden and planted 50 Ri6 durian trees. While researching and learning techniques through social networks, visiting gardens inside and outside the commune, after 4 years, the first batch of durian fruit reached over 1.2 tons, with a purchase price of 45,000 VND/kg. Mr. Lam happily said: "I am new to growing durian, have no experience so the yield is not high. I am researching the technical process for off-season fruit to increase income". In addition, Loan and her husband continue to intercrop over 100 red-fleshed jackfruit trees, which are popular with consumers with a fairly high purchase price.

Learning from the techniques of households that have successfully raised frogs and eels, in October 2024, Loan and her husband invested 50 million VND to complete the pond system, tested frog breeding and frog meat farming. After 2.5 months, Loan sold the first batch of 2,000 frog meat, weighing 700kg, for 50,000 VND/kg. Loan said: "The successful breeding of frogs has significantly reduced the cost of buying frogs. I feed the frogs on time and fully, after about 2.5 months, I sold 3-4 frogs/kg, and the purchase price is also reasonable." Recently, Loan raised 9,000 eel fry and they are growing well. Loan pays attention to cleaning the pond, changing the water regularly, and feeding them adequately, ensuring that the eels have a well-ventilated living environment, grow quickly, and have little loss. Currently, the price of eel fry is quite high, Mr. Lam is experimenting with breeding to reduce costs, be more proactive in raising and consuming eel meat. Ms. Loan estimates that eels can be raised for about 9 months, reaching a weight of 250 grams/eel. The purchase price ranges from 80,000-110,000 VND/kg, ensuring a stable source of consumption and income. In addition, Ms. Loan is raising over 100 super meat ducks. Ducks raised for about 3 months can reach 3.5-4 kg/eel, with a purchase price of 45,000 VND/kg.

With so many “tasks”, a working day for Ms. Loan and her husband starts from 4am to 8pm. Each person is in charge of specific tasks, without having to hire additional workers. Ms. Loan confided: “My husband and I are familiar with and attached to the job. The results from our hard work every day are the motivation that helps us strive to become well-off.”

Ms. Lien Quynh Phung, Vice President of the Women's Union of Thoi Tan Commune, said: "Ms. Loan and her husband are enthusiastic about business, keen to monitor and grasp market trends to change production methods appropriately, achieving economic efficiency. The Women's Union of the commune supported Ms. Loan with a preferential loan of 50 million VND and participated in the district's subsidy program for plant and animal varieties to have conditions to expand production scale. At the same time, replicate this model to encourage women in the area to actively develop the family economy."
