On Christmas, Duong Cong Son, 22 years old, a student of Computer Science at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, was awarded the CSC Award in 2023. This is an annual award organized by the university and the Foundation for Supporting Talented Students in the Construction Industry (FSC), to honor the most outstanding student each school year. The VND150 million award is also the highest for an outstanding student award at universities in the north.

Duong Cong Son is a former student of Yen Phong High School No. 1, Bac Ninh Province. At that time, Son loved playing games, often going on Youtube to learn how to create simple games. When he created games similar to Flappy Bird or Caro, Son decided to pursue the field of Information Technology. Finally, the male student was admitted to the Computer Science major of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering.
Since entering university, Son has joined the academic club and participated in student scientific research competitions because he loves making products.
Learning programming on his own online, Son created a website for his department, entered the product into a competition and won second prize at the school level. However, because he neglected his studies in class, Son was quite stressed when it came to the exam period.
"There were difficult subjects like Calculus, I had to stay up all night to review and then take the exam," Son recalled. This made his first year academic results not as excellent as expected.
In his second year, Son chose to intern at a company to learn from books and practice. However, the repetitive work, revolving around creating websites and simple applications, combined with having to work and study at home due to Covid-19, made Son frustrated. The young man realized that he was more suited to the research direction.
Son then spent the first 6 months of his third year focusing on improving his English for his major, and began to approach the complex stages of research. Son also joined a research group on artificial intelligence with the head of the department and a number of lecturers from home and abroad.
In addition, Son conducts scientific research with his friends at school and has won many awards. Most recently, in November, Son's group won first prize at the National Science and Technology Award for Students with the topic "Research and construction of routing applications in distributed and heterogeneous SDN networks".
Immediately after that, Son defended his thesis and graduated in November with a GPA of 3.8/4, one semester early compared to the standard training time.

From the beginning of next year, Son will study for a master's degree at Hanoi University of Science and Technology with a grant of 120 million VND per year from the VinIF Fund.
"My plan is to study for a master's degree in Vietnam and a doctorate in France or the US - where I have professors in my research group," Son shared.
The Bac Ninh boy said he will continue to set specific goals and then divide them into small stages to achieve them. Like when he was in college, Son often planned his tasks by day, week, and month, flexibly prioritizing tasks at each time and evaluating the effectiveness after completion. This approach helps Son balance his studies, scientific research, and social activities.
In the long term, the male student wants to work in businesses before returning to apply for a teaching position at Hanoi University of Construction.
"I want to accumulate enough experience from research to practice, so that when I become a lecturer, I can be a bridge to help students reach businesses or research work, just like what my teachers have supported me with," Son said.
