Michigan prosecutors have charged a 12-year-old girl with using acid to attack a friend after a playground argument.
The girl is scheduled to appear in court this afternoon on a charge of assault causing serious bodily injury, Wayne County, Michigan, District Attorney Kym L. Worthy said in a news release today. She was released on $10,000 bail on July 15.
The family of Deaira Summers, the 11-year-old girl who was attacked with acid, said the attack occurred on July 9, when Deaira and her cousins were on the playground at Vernor Elementary School. The 12-year-old girl began arguing with Deaira’s cousin.
After the argument, Deaira and her cousins left, but Deaira returned to get her purse and was splashed with acid. She suffered second and third degree burns to her back, arms and legs and spent four days in the hospital's burn unit.

Deaira said she screamed and cried after the acid was thrown on her. "At first I didn't feel anything. But after about two seconds it started burning, going through my shirt and shorts," she said.
"The scars will stay with her for the rest of her life," said Domonique Summers, Deaira's mother. "It was a traumatic event and she will never forget it."
Officials have not released the identity of the girl charged. The trial will take place in the juvenile courtroom of the Detroit Municipal Court.
The girl’s family has not commented on the incident and it is unclear whether they have hired a lawyer to defend their daughter. Officials have not commented on what sentence the girl could face.
Investigation results show that the mother of the girl being prosecuted gave the bottle of acid to her child. Doctors at the hospital have not been able to clearly identify the type of acid.
"These horrific acts committed in the heat of the moment can have lifelong effects on others. There is no excuse for this behavior," said prosecutor Worthy.
