According to the latest report from the South China Sea Strategic Situation Probing Initiative (SCSPI), the US has significantly increased reconnaissance activities in the airspace of the South China Sea in January 2025.

Newsweek news network cited a report by SCSPI - based in Beijing - showing that there were up to 79 reconnaissance missions conducted by US RC-135 and P-8A aircraft in January 2025, up from 65 missions recorded in December 2024.

The number of flights in December 2024 also increased compared to the previous month. These aircraft were deployed from land bases and operated in airspace near waters claimed by China.

The US Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) confirmed that these flights were part of routine operations that had been planned in advance.

PACAF emphasizes its commitment to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region, focusing on promoting security and stability throughout the region.

However, the Chinese Embassy in the US has voiced its opposition to the move, affirming that Washington is not a party involved in the East Sea dispute.

Beijing has accused Washington's spying activities of posing a "serious danger" to China's national security, and vowed to continue taking necessary measures to protect its sovereignty.

According to a recent Pentagon report, since late 2023, the People's Liberation Army has reduced the number of dangerous intercepts of US aircraft compared to the previous two years.
