US announces investigation results into Trump assassination attempt

(Dan Tri) - The results of the investigation into the failed assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania show that the Secret Service and local law enforcement did not coordinate closely.

"Simply put, the evidence the task force has received to date suggests that the tragic and shocking events of July 13 were preventable and should not have occurred," the preliminary report released by the US congressional investigation agency on October 21 said. The 53-page report by the US congressional investigation agency into the attempted assassination of Mr. Trump includes eight main points, including the conclusion that there was a lack of planning and coordination between the Secret Service and local law enforcement. According to the report, the roof where the suspect hid and aimed at Mr. Trump was not within the security perimeter, although it had a "clear view of the stage and the elevated position". Local officials posted inside the building did not secure the complex or the roof because they believed their job was to monitor the campaign site. The report added that the Secret Service and local police had separate command posts and did not share a common radio channel. This created loopholes that Crooks could have exploited. A US congressman said earlier this month that FBI investigators may have destroyed evidence in the case by scrubbing the roof and allowing Crooks' body to be cremated before the autopsy was completed. The Butler County Coroner's Office in Pennsylvania returned the body to Crooks' family after the FBI said it did not need any more evidence. According to the autopsy, Crooks died from a single gunshot wound to the head, likely caused by a Secret Service sniper. Investigators found no evidence of alcohol or drugs in Crooks' blood. The new investigation report indicates that Crooks did not use a ladder to reach the roof, but climbed up using the air conditioning unit. The ladder seen after the incident was installed by local police so investigators could access the roof. Mr. Trump was assassinated while campaigning outdoors in Burler County, Pennsylvania on July 13, just days before the Republican National Convention to formally nominate him for president. The suspect was identified as Thomas Crooks, 20 years old.
