'Moana 2' breaks many box office records

Moana 2 's five-day opening weekend is the biggest of all time, breaking multiple records since its release on November 27.

Thanksgiving also saw box office success for two other blockbusters, Universal’s Wicked and Paramount’s Gladiator II . The trio created the biggest Thanksgiving weekend of all time in North America, grossing $420 million, $100 million more than the previous record set in 2018 ($316 million), according to Comscore.

In part 2, Moana is still voiced by Auli'i Cravalho.

Globally, Moana 2 opened with $165.3 million, bringing its total to $386.3 million after debuting at No. 1 worldwide.

The first Moana , released in 2016, grossed over $665 million worldwide. Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, Part 2 follows the young heroine as she embarks on an unexpected adventure after a call from her ancestors.

Moana 2 has exceeded expectations. Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman said: "We are so fortunate to have the incredibly talented and hard-working creative team at Disney Animation who brought this new adventure to life, along with our two incredible voice stars Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson. The music is incredible too. This is a moment to celebrate and we are grateful to all the moviegoers and fans who helped make Moana 2 a record-breaking film."

Moana 2 had the second-biggest global opening of the year, behind Disney's Deadpool & Wolverine . France led the market with a whopping $18.8 million, the biggest opening of all time for an animated film. In other major markets, the film had the second-biggest openings in Italy and Brazil. Moana 2 also had the biggest opening for a Walt Disney animated title across Latin America and in nearly 30 individual markets worldwide, including Australia and Mexico.

In Vietnam, according to Box Office Vietnam, Moana 2 (Vietnamese title : Journey of Moana 2 ) released in theaters on 2 early screening days, November 30 and December 1, has taken the box office throne from Lynx: Ghost in the Shell , earning 8.7 billion VND, among the highest-grossing films of the past weekend.
