How does the Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station Metro connect Cat Linh - Ha Dong?
Báo Lao Động•13/08/2024
Hanoi's transport sector is studying the feasibility of a project to build a tunnel connecting the Nhon - Hanoi railway station with the Cat Linh - Ha Dong railway at Cat Linh station.
Cat Linh - Ha Dong (Line 2A) is the first urban railway line in Hanoi to come into operation, starting from November 2021 after 10 years of construction. The project has a total initial investment of VND 8,769 billion. By 2017, the total investment increased to VND 18,000 billion. The entire line is 13km long, completely elevated, with 12 stations. The starting point is Cat Linh station (Cat Linh street, Ba Dinh district) and the end point is Yen Nghia station (Yen Nghia bus station, Ha Dong district).

The Cat Linh - Ha Dong railway line has 13 trains, each train consists of 4 carriages, maximum capacity of 960 people/train, maximum speed of 80 km/h, operating speed of 35 km/h. The train travel time on the entire route is 23 minutes. According to statistics, every day there are over 35,000 passengers using the Cat Linh - Ha Dong railway line to travel, of which 47% are people going to work, 45% are people going to school and the remaining 8% are traveling for other purposes. Of which, passengers regularly travel by monthly tickets with an average rate of 70% during the day, more than 85% during rush hour, contributing to reducing vehicle density on the route corridor, limiting traffic congestion and environmental pollution. After Cat Linh - Ha Dong, the Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station metro line also officially opened for commercial operation on August 8, after 14 years of public anticipation. The milestone of opening and putting into commercial operation the Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station metro line also ended the "lonely" days of the Cat Linh - Ha Dong metro line.

Urban railway project No. 3, Nhon - Hanoi station section is 12.5km long, with 8 elevated stations and 4 underground stations. Of which, the elevated section Nhon - Cau Giay is 8.5km long, the underground section Cau Giay - Hanoi station is 4km long. The project started in 2009, planned to be completed in 2015 but the progress was delayed many times, increasing the capital from more than 18,000 billion VND to nearly 36,000 billion VND. The entire route is expected to be completed in 2027, the elevated section in August 2024. Nhon - Hanoi station metro has 10 trains, maximum speed 80 km/h, average operating speed 35 km/h. Each train consists of 4 cars, each car carries 236 passengers, each trip carries about 950 passengers. According to information from Hanoi Metro, the Nhon - Cau Giay metro line has served nearly 300,000 passengers after 5 days of opening (from August 8 to August 12). Of which, the number of passengers traveling on the Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station metro line on August 11 was recorded at 100,000, breaking the record for the busiest day of the Cat Linh - Ha Dong line (58,000 passengers on May 1, 2023).

Regarding the route, the Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station and Cat Linh - Ha Dong metro lines will connect at Cat Linh. However, the underground section of the Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station metro line has not been completed, so in the short term, the city will connect these two metro lines by public buses and bicycles. In the long term, the city plans to build a tunnel connecting the two urban railway lines. The Hanoi Department of Transport said that it is studying and building a connection plan between the Cat Linh elevated station (line 2A) and the S10 underground station (line 3) within the red line boundary, implemented in Ba Dinh and Dong Da districts. This agency proposed implementing according to option 2: Building pedestrian tunnels, transfer rooms and having 2 connection directions. Going to Cat Linh station (line 2A): entrances and exits (stairs, escalators and elevators). Go to station S10 (line 3): connect to the transfer floor of station S10. This is a group C project, with a total estimated investment of about 113 billion VND.
