At around 6am on October 14, Ms. Pham Thi Phan discovered that her son, Pham Van Yen (45 years old), had died at home. That same evening, Ms. Phan’s daughter attended the funeral and mixed 100 ml of powdered milk for her mother to drink. Afterwards, the old woman showed signs of chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and vomiting, and died about 5 minutes later. The family believed that Ms. Phan and Mr. Yen died of illness, so they did not report it to the authorities.
In the early morning of October 15, Mr. Pham Minh Tan (55 years old), Ms. Phan's son, came to help organize the funeral. Here, Mr. Tan continued to mix 150 ml of the same type of powdered milk to drink, then had a headache, dizziness, vomiting, and was taken by his family to the emergency room at Vinh Long Provincial Hospital.
The doctor suspected that the patient had milk poisoning. Mr. Tan is now out of danger and continues treatment.
It is not yet clear what kind of milk powder is above and where it comes from. Authorities are investigating the incident.
