In an interview on April 3, McTominay said he felt "misprofiled" in his playing position at MU. He said that not being able to compete with Paul Pogba, who was playing as a central midfielder at the time, was inevitable.
Instead of being used as an attacking midfielder, McTominay often has to play as a "number 6" or even a centre-back, which does not suit the Scotland international's style of play.
"When I came into the first team, I was misplaced," McTominay explained. "It's not the coaches' fault. My strengths have always been getting into the box, scoring goals and creating danger. But I was used as a No. 6 or a centre-back. That's never been my forte."
McTominay also stressed that at the age of 20, it would be difficult for him to compete with an established star like Pogba for a starting spot. "You have to know your position and do what is required of you. In the last few seasons, I have started to get into the penalty area more, score more goals. Last season was my best season," the midfielder shared.

McTominay made 255 appearances for United before leaving the club last summer. He joined Napoli for a transfer fee of £25.6 million and immediately became a mainstay of the Serie A club. Here, McTominay was highly regarded by coach Antonio Conte and played in his preferred attacking midfield position.
Not only Pogba, MU's next contracts such as Christian Eriksen and Casemiro also made it difficult for McTominay to find a starting position.
"They always sign players who are not what people expect," the midfielder added. "I always want to show that I can play every game. That's not something that affects me. You can only control what you have to do on the pitch."
In Serie A, McTominay and his teammates are currently second in the table, 3 points behind Inter Milan. There are still 8 more rounds left in the tournament.
