In the first 8 months of the year, although the volume of cassava exports decreased, the export of cassava and cassava products to Taiwan, Malaysia, etc. still grew well in both volume and value compared to the same period. In particular, Japan was the export market with the strongest growth.

Exports of cassava and cassava products to Japan in the first 8 months of this year reached 2,407 tons with a value of 1.24 million USD, an increase of 333.7% in volume and 269.1% in value compared to the same period in 2022. Notably, the average export price in the first 8 months of the year to this market was 515.3 USD/ton, compared to the price of 605.5 USD/ton in the same period last year, a decrease of 14.9%.

In August, China remained the largest importer of cassava and cassava products from Vietnam, reaching 212,230 tons and accounting for 95.91% of the country's total cassava exports; worth 98.04 million USD, equivalent to an increase of 56.1% in volume and 47.2% in value compared to July.

In the first 8 months of the year, Vietnam exported 1.69 million tons of cassava and cassava products to China with a value of 687.24 million USD, down 13.4% in volume and 19.9% in value compared to the same period last year.

According to the General Statistics Office, Vietnam is currently the second largest cassava exporter in the world, after Thailand. Currently, the country has 120 industrial-scale cassava starch processing factories, with a total annual design capacity of 11.3 million tons of fresh tubers. The cassava growing area nationwide is currently about 530,000 hectares/year.

It is forecasted that the demand for cassava and cassava starch in the coming time will remain high as many countries increase their food and grain reserves for consumption as well as animal feed production.

However, cassava growing areas in some provinces are being infected with mosaic disease, causing a decrease in supply and affecting the productivity of the new crop. Therefore, it is forecasted that Vietnam's cassava and cassava product exports will not increase significantly.
