Man Utd announce new head coach Ruben Amorim

On the evening of November 1, the Man Utd club's homepage officially announced the appointment of Mr. Ruben Amorim as the team's head coach. Amorim will sign a two-and-a-half-year contract, lasting until June 2027. Amorim is currently completing the process of preparing labor documents, in time to join Man Utd from November 11, 2024.

"Ruben is one of the most exciting and qualified coaches in European football. Amorim is very successful, both as a player and as a coach. He brought 2 Portuguese national championships - Primeira Liga to Sporting CP" , Man Utd media wrote on the club's homepage.

While waiting for Amorim, interim coach Ruud van Nistelrooy will join Man Utd in preparing for three matches against Chelsea (November 3), PAOK (November 8) and Leicester (November 10). Coach Amorim is expected to be present in the stands at Old Trafford Stadium to welcome Leicester on November 10.

Amorim will have two weeks to get used to Man Utd and the English football atmosphere, while the players are training with the national team. Coach Amorim's first match as Man Utd manager will take place on November 24, against newly promoted team Ipswich Town.

Ruben Amorim, 39, is one of the young coaches working in Europe. His most notable achievement before moving to Man Utd was winning the Primeira Liga title with Sporting Lisbon in the 2021-22 season, ending the team's 19-year streak of not winning a national championship. Two years later, he continued to make his mark with the Primeira Liga title in the 2023-24 season.

Sporting are currently the strongest club in the Portuguese National Championship. They have won 9 out of 9 matches, scoring 30 goals and conceding only 2.

Coach Amorim's talent is demonstrated through his modern attacking thinking. He uses a 3-4-2-1 formation, specializing in ball control and flexibility when attacking. When pressured by the opponent, the 2 wingers actively retreat to support the 3 central defenders, creating a 5-man midfield. This deployment is quite similar to Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen in the 2023-24 season, or Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea in the 2021-22 season.

In attack, coach Amorim likes to use tall, independent strikers. At Man Utd, Mr. Amorim already has two such strikers, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
