We came to Tho Chau (Kien Giang) on calm sea days, the island appeared like a sparkling gem in the middle of the Southwest sea and sky of the Fatherland.

Tho Chau has beautiful sea and blue waves, just like the story of young teacher Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen and Lieutenant Cao Xuan Tuan.

As soon as the ship docked, the children from the fishing village rushed out to greet the strangers. The children, who were only 4 or 5 years old, politely asked: “Hello, uncle and aunt”; “Where are you going, uncle and aunt?”…

As soon as they spoke, they nodded and greeted their teacher, then rushed into the schoolyard.

Originally from Quang Binh, Ms. Huyen and her husband came to this beautiful island when they got married in 2022. Tho Chau is also considered the place where the young couple started their special honeymoon.

“Mr. Tuan works at the radar station on the island. After the wedding, we moved here to work. It was fun, we got to see each other every day,” Ms. Huyen shared.

Besides the love story, the love of the sea and islands is also a great motivation that urged the young teacher to decide to go to Tho Chau to teach.

“My parents were afraid of me going far away, especially in this stormy sea. But I was determined.

Firstly, I went to share with my husband. Secondly, I understood that teachers are the same no matter where they teach. Especially children in the front lines of the Fatherland need teachers like me more.

So I see this as an opportunity to contribute," Ms. Huyen confided.

From Tho Chau Primary School where Ms. Huyen teaches, you can see the shimmering blue of the Southwestern sea and sky. At the foot of the island are fish farms, which are also where the students here live.

The primary school still has three more classes: nursery, shoot, and leaves so that children on the island can be exposed to letters early, which is also a way for parents to feel secure when sending their children to school every day.

Ms. Huyen is in charge of the kindergarten class, a very active age group for children. However, according to her, the children on the island are very well-behaved and the teachers focus on teaching them politeness.

Small in stature, no need to be serious, the young teacher just needs to smile and speak and the whole class will obey.

“My husband and I also have a child who is 2 years old this year. Raising a child on a remote island, I understand the difficulties of children here. That fact makes me love my children even more,” said Ms. Huyen.

This school is also lacking compared to many schools on the mainland.

“In the morning here we use generators to provide electricity for the classroom. In the afternoon when there is no electricity we have to take the kids outside to do extracurricular activities.

Sometimes when it's hot, I feel sorry for the kids," Ms. Huyen said.

Seeing her take care of the children in the hallway during the power outage, then gently wiping the salty sweat from the sea breeze from the faces of the students in the frontier area, one can see the love the young teacher has for her children.

Ms. Huyen admitted that she was very confused when she first arrived here, especially because she was unfamiliar with everyone on the island. But according to her, the love for her homeland has made the bond between teachers on remote islands like her stronger.

Asked about her family, the young teacher's eyes turned red: "I remember, of course, but I'm used to it. Besides, there's internet on the island, so I can call home and ask about my family at any time."

Pointing to a family photo on her phone, Ms. Huyen said she only visits home once a year during the summer because it is very far from Tho Chau.

"I didn't go home for Tet because the vacation was quite short, so my husband and I decided to stay and celebrate Tet with the islanders," Ms. Huyen shared.

And the young teacher became even more attached to the disadvantaged students in Tho Chau.
