Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Washington, Foreign Minister Arnoldo André said the US has asked Costa Rica to consider establishing a migration program similar to the agreement Panama signed with Washington in July 2023.
Mr. Arnoldo André expressed his desire to learn from Panama's experience in this field, and mentioned the bilateral meeting with his US counterpart Antony Blinken on the sidelines of the APEP event.
Costa Rica's foreign minister said the country currently has 1 million immigrants, most of whom are Nicaraguan citizens seeking political and economic asylum, and highlighted the importance of addressing the migration issue.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Blinken emphasized the need to promote bilateral cooperation, especially in regional security, economic growth and controlling migration flows.
On this occasion, Foreign Minister Arnoldo André announced a US initiative to cooperate in promoting semiconductor assembly, testing and packaging capacity in Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica.
