On February 1, Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) issued a statement in response to reports that Chinese company DeepSeek may have used US chips (which are banned from being exported to China) through intermediaries in Singapore.

The statement stressed that Nvidia, the leading US artificial intelligence (AI) chipmaker, has said that “there is no reason to believe that DeepSeek has purchased any export-controlled products from Singapore.” MTI asserted: “We require US companies, like Nvidia, to comply with US export controls and our domestic laws. Our Customs and Enforcement agencies will continue to work closely with our US counterparts… We will always uphold the rule of law and take decisive and firm action against individuals and companies that violate the law.”
MTI noted that Nvidia stated that “most of the shipments related to Singapore revenue are to locations other than Singapore and that shipments to Singapore are insignificant.” MTI stressed: “Singapore is an international business hub.
Major US and European companies have significant operations here. Nvidia explained that many of these customers use their Singapore business entities to purchase chips for products destined for the US and other Western countries.”
Singapore has become a focal point in a US investigation into whether DeepSeek, the company whose AI models have shaken up the tech world, circumvented US restrictions on advanced Nvidia chips by buying them from third parties in other countries, including Singapore.
Close scrutiny of Singapore has increased after Nvidia's latest financial results showed that 22% of the company's third-quarter revenue came from the country, making Singapore the biggest buyer of Nvidia's chips after the United States.
However, an Nvidia spokesperson said on January 29 that the company’s revenue related to Singapore “does not indicate a shift to China. Our public filings report ‘invoice to’, not ‘shipment to’ customer locations.”
