The United Nations (UN) will allocate $11 million to help address food insecurity and acute malnutrition in northeastern Nigeria, said UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths.
In June 2023, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said that more than 700,000 children in northeastern Nigeria needed treatment for acute wasting.
In December 2023, Vice President Kashim Shettima established a core working committee on nutrition to address malnutrition rates in Nigeria.
Mr Shettima said the rate of severe malnutrition in Nigeria is 33% and the country loses $2.5 billion due to malnutrition every year. Only 88 out of 100 children under the age of five survive the nutritional crisis in Nigeria.
