UN calls for lifting of sanctions on Syria to allow humanitarian relief
Việt Nam•17/12/2024
The United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Syria (UNCIS) has just made an urgent appeal, asking the international community to lift sanctions against Syria to facilitate the provision of humanitarian aid to millions of people in difficulty.
According to UNCIS President Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, the current sanctions are having serious consequences, especially for the poor and the most vulnerable groups in Syria. He stressed that the partial lifting of sanctions would facilitate the reconstruction of the country and improve the lives of its people. At the same time, UNCIS also called on the international community to increase humanitarian assistance to Syria, especially in the context of the increasingly serious humanitarian situation caused by the prolonged conflict.
The urgent call by the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Syria (UNCIS) for the international community to lift sanctions against Syria is significant. It highlights the need to ensure that humanitarian aid can be delivered effectively and in a timely manner to millions of Syrians in need. Sanctions can hinder the ability of humanitarian agencies to reach those most in need. The call to lift sanctions also reflects a humanitarian perspective that the right to life and assistance must be given priority, regardless of the political or conflict context. Lifting sanctions can be seen as a step towards building trust between the parties involved, thereby facilitating peaceful dialogue and conflict resolution. This appeal also puts pressure on countries and international organizations to reconsider their sanctions policies and consider their impact on the people in Syria, thereby encouraging international cooperation and assistance. This appeal can help raise the international community's awareness of the serious humanitarian situation in Syria, thereby encouraging concrete actions to help the people. The UNCIS appeal is not only humanitarian but also has profound significance in promoting peace, stability and respect for human rights in the context of the protracted conflict in Syria./.
