Leicester City, Leeds United relegated

Southampton were certain to be relegated before the final round. The three teams that had to fight for a place in the relegation zone were Everton, Leicester and Leeds. Everton had the biggest advantage with a 2-point advantage over the two opponents. They achieved their goal by defeating Bournemouth 1-0 with a goal from Doucoure.

Southampton spent 11 consecutive seasons in the Premier League before returning to the First Division the following year. They were relegated with two games to spare.

In addition to the three relegation spots, the Premier League welcomed three promoted teams from the First Division: Burnley, Sheffield and Luton Town. Burnley and Sheffield won direct promotion after finishing in the top two positions of the First Division. Luton Town won their tickets via a play-off series.
