According to the Daily Mail , Man Utd has received important support from the British Government in its plan to build a new stadium with a capacity of 100,000 seats. This is a major step forward in the Old Trafford redevelopment project, one of the largest sports infrastructure reconstruction plans in British history.
If completed, Man Utd will own the stadium with the largest capacity in England. Currently, Wembley is the stadium with the largest capacity in the foggy country with 90,000 seats.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves has publicly expressed her support for the plan to redevelop Old Trafford and the surrounding area. The UK government sees the project as a model for urban development plans that will help boost economic growth in the area.
In addition to building a new stadium, the project also includes the development of residential, commercial and public spaces, with the aim of turning Old Trafford into the new growth centre of Manchester.
A research group, including former footballer Gary Neville, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and sports regulator Lord Coe, has been tasked with assessing the feasibility of two options: renovating the existing Old Trafford stadium or building a new stadium on adjacent land.
The report from the research group suggests that renovating Old Trafford – which has existed since 1910 – could increase capacity to 87,000, but would be limited by the existing structure, while a completely new 100,000-seat stadium would not only meet current demand but also allow for long-term growth.
Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has called it the biggest urban redevelopment project since the 2012 London Olympics. He said the project would not only transform Old Trafford but also bring significant economic benefits to the whole of Greater Manchester.
“This is a key part of a 10-year plan to drive growth not just in the Old Trafford area but across Greater Manchester,” Andy Burnham stressed.
According to sources, Man Utd are focusing resources on the plan to build a new stadium. Preparations are expected to begin before the end of this year, with a final decision expected before the end of the season.
The project not only serves the sporting purpose but also aims to create a modern, multi-functional and sustainable urban center. This is considered an important step to help Man Utd maintain its leading position not only on the field but also in infrastructure and community development.
