In the 10th round of the Olympiad that ended early this morning (September 22), the Vietnamese men's chess team unfortunately lost to the Spanish team. On board 1, Le Quang Liem (elo 2,741) had a clear advantage over David Anton (elo 2,665), but the Spanish number 1 player made a sharp move to turn the situation around.

On table 3, Le Tuan Minh (elo 2,564) also created an overwhelming position against Alan Pichot (elo 2,628), however, the Vietnamese player could not convert it into a victory and let his opponent hold him to a regrettable draw. On table 2, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (elo 2,633) drew with Vallejo Pons (elo 2,657) and on table 1, Tran Tuan Minh (2,434) shared points with Santos Latasa (elo 2,624). In the end, the Vietnamese men's chess team lost to the Spanish team with a score of 1.5-2.5. This defeat caused the Vietnamese team to drop to 25th place, having risen to second place after an impressive series of matches, but now Le Quang Liem and his teammates have no chance of competing for medals at the 2024 Olympiad. In the 11th and final game taking place today, the Vietnamese chess team will face the Canadian team. Against an opponent with a lower average elo, Le Quang Liem did not compete, giving the opportunity to 15-year-old player Bang Gia Huy.

Vietnam women's chess team in the match lost to host Hungary

In the women's team, the Vietnamese team also unfortunately lost to the host Hungary with a score of 1.5-2.5. Vo Thi Kim Phung, Luong Phuong Hanh, Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong all shared points with their opponents. In which, Kim Phung held the former number 1 of Vietnam, now playing for the Hungarian team, Hoang Thanh Trang to a draw on table number 2. However, on table number 1, Pham Le Thao Nguyen (elo 2,380) lost to Gaal Zsoka (elo 2,385), so the Vietnamese women's chess team accepted defeat in the end.

After 10 games, the Vietnamese women's chess team ranked 10th and will face the Chinese team in the 11th and final game today. If they achieve good results in this game, Pham Le Thao Nguyen and her teammates will improve their ranking.
