“I have been waiting for this moment for a long time,” Ginny said at her graduation ceremony on June 16, according to USA Today .

Not finished thesis, have to follow husband

In 1936, Ginny entered Stanford University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1940.

A year later, Ginny had completed all of her master's courses. While Ginny was working on her thesis, her then boyfriend, George Hislop, was drafted into the army to serve in World War II.

So the couple decided to get married and Ginny followed her husband to the US Army's Fort Sill outpost in Oklahoma.

“At that time, I thought I really liked studying and could complete my master's program later, so I got married and followed my husband,” Ginny shared.

Ginny Hislop Receives Master's Degree at Age 105

After the war, Ginny and her husband and two children moved to Yakima, Washington.

Although her master's studies were interrupted, Ginny used her knowledge to pursue a career in education.

Ginny initially joined a local school board because she disagreed with the school's decision to direct her daughter to a home economics program.

She later served as chair of the boards of trustees of city and state public schools in Washington and as a founding member of the boards of trustees of Yakima Community College and Heritage University (Toppenish, Washington).

“I feel that all children should have the opportunity to reach their potential to the best of their ability and that everyone should have the opportunity to go to university,” said Ginny. “I think I have done my best to do the best I can to improve the school system.”

Today, Ginny remains actively involved in community activities and spends more time with her four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Ginny Hislop (105 years old) received her master's degree at Stanford University's graduation ceremony.

Received Master's Degree After More Than 80 Years

“The biggest lesson I learned from my mother-in-law is that you never really stop learning. She is an avid reader and at 105, she is still active,” said Doug Jensen, Ginny Hislop’s son-in-law.

Mr. Jensen recently contacted Stanford University to inquire about his mother-in-law’s situation. When she left Stanford in 1940, Ginny had earned enough credits to graduate, but had not yet completed her thesis.

After eight decades, Stanford University has adjusted its master's program and no longer requires a thesis. Thus, Ms. Ginny is eligible to graduate with a master's degree.

At the graduation ceremony, as Ginny walked across the stage to receive her master's degree, her entire family, children, grandchildren, and students stood up and applauded her.
