Se San hydroelectric reservoir has an area of about 56 km2, located between Gia Lai and Kon Tum provinces.

For decades, there has been a floating village here, mainly households from the Western provinces coming to fish and raise fish for a living, creating a fishing village in the middle of the lake.

According to the locals, about 15 years ago, 7 households from the Western provinces came to the Se San hydroelectric reservoir to build cage houses and live on the water to catch and raise fish. Seeing that it was easy to make a living, they informed their relatives from the countryside to come and live and fish with them. Thus, a floating village was created on the lake. However, they could not register for temporary residence and their lives were as precarious as their boats on the lake.

The turning point came in 2015, when Kon Tum province welcomed them with open arms, granted land in village 7, Ia Toi commune, Ia H'Drai district, and provided financial support for households to come ashore to build houses, register for permanent residence, and stabilize their lives.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Khanh (46 years old) said that since 2009, he has brought his wife and two young children to the Se San hydroelectric reservoir area to make a living. Unable to register for temporary residence, it was difficult for his children to go to school. At one point, he wanted to return to his hometown in Dong Thap, but then fortunately, the government granted him land and created conditions for him to settle down permanently, so his life has become more and more stable. Up to now, Mr. Khanh has considered this border land as his second homeland and has no intention of returning to his hometown.

"When I came here, I saw that life was peaceful, there were a lot of fish and shrimp, so it was easier to make a living. Now, every day, my husband and I catch fish, raise fish in cages and serve tourists, which also brings in a good income," Mr. Khanh happily said.

Mr. Nguyen Tuan Vu said that 8 years ago, when he came here, he only thought that to make a living, he would return to his hometown in An Giang when he had money. However, after being granted land by the local government, he built a house and had a good income from fishing and fish farming, so he decided to stay here for a long time.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhan (42 years old, from An Giang) said that he has lived in the lake area for 13 years and considers this his second hometown. When Tet comes, sometimes he misses the atmosphere of his old hometown, but thanks to the support and sharing of his brothers and neighbors, his homesickness is also relieved. "On Tet, we also wrap Chung cake, Tet cake, buy candies and jams. We go around the neighborhood to wish each other a healthy new year, all the best, treat each other to delicious food and tell each other stories about our hometown" - Mr. Nhan said.

Mr. Le Van Quan, Vice Chairman of Ia Toi Commune People's Committee, said that the fishing village has 29 households and 103 people, all of whom have stabilized their lives, with an average income of 45 million VND/person/year. Since 2018, the Commune People's Committee has mobilized fishing households to establish Se San Cooperative with main products from fish. Every year, the cooperative sells about 80 tons of products to the market, bringing stable income to its members.

Nowadays, in addition to fishing and fish farming, the villagers also take tourists to visit the lake, Mo waterfall and serve food. When returning, most tourists buy specialties such as anchovy rice paper, dried snakehead fish, dried perch... as gifts. This helps the villagers have a better income.
