Educational innovation is still being persistently implemented in every class so that students can have comprehensive development. Among them, there are teachers who constantly study and innovate in teaching to spread positive values to their students every day.
Where teachers and students value music
Music is not only a subject but also plays an important role in nurturing the soul and comprehensive development of high school students. Music helps students relieve stress, balance emotions and express themselves. Music has become a "bridge" between the past and the present, between tradition and modernity, helping students develop comprehensively.
At Phung Khac Khoan High School - Thach That (Hanoi), Music has become a part of the curriculum since the first year of implementing the 2018 General Education Program. This change was achieved thanks to the pioneering and dedication of Mr. Nguyen Khac Ly, Vice Principal in charge of professional matters.
Faced with the serious shortage of staff in high schools in Hanoi and many other localities, Mr. Nguyen Khac Ly is always aware of his role and responsibility.
To do this and do it well, Mr. Ly proactively participated in an online course to gain experience and knowledge as a basis for directing professional activities, with the requirement of effective, high-quality, low-cost training. Mr. Ly realized that online teaching in a new way is a solution that can overcome difficulties.
Thanks to his efforts, Music has reached the students, students practice musical instruments such as guitar and bamboo flute. This helps students develop performance skills, confidence and cultural understanding.
Practicing with musical instruments also helps students develop patience, discipline, concentration and reduce social media use. After the first year of school, many students have confidently performed in front of crowds, contributing to enriching the cultural and spiritual life of the school.
It is known that up to now, the Music teaching model of Phung Khac Khoan High School - Thach That has been chosen by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training as a model to popularize to high schools in Hanoi.
Literature: No more teacher talking and students listening
In the context that the entire education sector is implementing the 2018 General Education Program towards developing learners’ capacity and qualities, in which critical thinking is one of the important capacities of 21st century citizens. However, in Vietnam, debate activities are still quite new, students are mainly exposed to them through competitions.
Ms. Hoang Thi Man, Principal of Newton Secondary and High School (Bac Tu Liem District, Hanoi) noticed that in each Literature class, teachers try to impart knowledge to students, while students listen attentively, take notes, and rarely express personal opinions about the work.
As a manager, having many opportunities to observe classes, Ms. Man realized more clearly that Literature teachers talk a lot while in reality, each literary text has many meanings and to understand the content of the work, learners must have a multi-dimensional perspective.
From that reality, the idea of introducing debate into the curriculum to improve the quality of teaching and learning Literature began to grow in her.
Teaching Literature and English requires focusing on developing the four skills of Listening - Speaking - Reading - Writing. Therefore, Ms. Hoang Thi Man and other professional groups have developed a program and organized debate lessons in English and Vietnamese for students in the whole school.
With synchronous solutions, implementing 1 debate lesson/week, and founding and developing the "Debate" Club for Newton students. Besides organizing an annual debate competition, creating a playground for students to express themselves, the school has achieved comprehensive results, helping students develop their abilities and contributing to the overall achievements of the whole school.
To do that is a 9-year journey with different levels; initially organizing an English debate playground for students; establishing a Debate Club; building a Vietnamese version of the debate competition applicable to both teachers and students; implementing a debate topic; piloting debate with 15 classes and officially becoming a subject from the 2023-2024 school year.
After a short time of implementing debate, the quality of teaching and learning English and Literature at Newton School has been improved. Instead of having to listen a lot, students now become the center of the lesson in a debate period.
Dr. Nguyen Ngoc An, Chairman of the Vietnam Education Trade Union, commented: "Debate is a good but difficult teaching technique. This technique trains students to listen actively and give constructive feedback.
I believe that Principal Hoang Thi Man's method will bring good results and spread more and more."
