How to avoid dry eyes in cold weather?

Tears are essential to the functioning of the eyes. Every time we blink, the glands in our eyes secrete tears, creating a thin film of water that lubricates the surface of the eyeball, according to Women's Health magazine.

Artificial tears and some eye drops will help relieve dry eyes effectively and quickly.

This membrane is made up of tears, mucus and natural oils secreted by the body. Thanks to this membrane, the surface of the eyeball is kept moist and prevents the risk of infection, preventing dirt and harmful substances from entering the eye. It is also thanks to tears that vision can be seen clearly.

However, on cold days at the end of the year, dry humidity, sharp drops in temperature and cold winds will cause this layer of tears to partially evaporate. The result is dry eyes.

Dry eyes are characterized by symptoms such as a burning sensation in the eyes, eye strain, redness, and a feeling of something being stuck in the eye. To compensate for the loss of tear film, the glands in the eye produce more tears. These tears produce so much that they can run out.

Dry eyes can cause vision loss, blurred vision, and increased risk of infection. If left untreated, this condition can lead to infection, corneal ulcers, scarring, and severe vision loss.

Foods rich in vitamin A

To prevent dry eyes, experts recommend wearing glasses on windy days, drinking plenty of water to prevent dehydration, and using a humidifier in your home. Artificial tears and some eye drops are extremely effective in relieving dry eyes.

Blinking frequently is also important to reduce and prevent dry eyes. Every time you blink, your lacrimal glands produce tears to replace the tears that have evaporated due to wind and cold, dry air.

In addition, diet is also very important. Vitamin A, D and omega-3 fatty acids are three nutrients that are scientifically proven to help prevent dry eyes. Foods rich in vitamin A include carrots, sweet potatoes, beef liver, spinach and broccoli. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids include avocados, walnuts and fatty fish. The body synthesizes vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight, according to Women's Health.
